Happy Flashback Friday! This week we are sharing a photograph taken in the Great Room Garden during a garden party Alice "Alla" Bretherton Brown hosted in 1933.

Thank you to everyone who played yesterday’s round of What is it Wednesday! The item that we shared was a strop. A strop is a tool used to straighten and polish a shaving razor or other small knife. They were made from leather, canvas, or a soft wood. Many strops featured a hook to be used while hanging, like the one pictured here, but some came in a smaller handheld format. Their history is tied to the straight edge razor, which dates back to 1680. Straight edge razors were usually sold unfinished, and the customer would finish the blade with the strop. However, as many men were not comfortable using them and they needed sharpening often, this style of razor was replaced in 1740 with a thinner edged blade.

By the late 1800s, safety razors with disposable blades had been invented, which caused the straight edge razor, and the strop to hone it, to decline in popularity, becoming rather esoteric since.

Happy Teacup Tuesday! This week we are sharing a cup that is stamped with “Royal Crown Derby.”

Royal Crown Derby originated in 1750 when Andrew Planche and William Duesbury, a porcelain painter, teamed up to manufacture high quality porcelain in three factories in the City of Derby. In 1761 the company created a commemorative piece for the coronation of King George III and have supplied wares to every British monarch since.

In 1770 Duesbury acquired the Chelsea China works; the best china artists worked there and the company opened a grand London-based showroom. In 1774, King George III so admired their design and craftmanship, he granted the honor of using the crown in the backstamp. Duesbury died in 1786, and Duesbury II continued the business.

Duesbury II died in 1797 and many workers left, causing a decline in the fortunes of the company. In 1811 Robert Bloor took control of the factory and rebuilt the team of painters. When he died in 1845 a group of former employees set up a small business and continued to use the molds and patterns. In the 1890's Queen Victoria gave them the honor of using the title "Royal." The company is still in production.

This cup is in the pattern “Mandarin.”

Happy Flashback Friday! As Alice Bingham and Keith Powell were married on June 10th, 1915, we wanted to share a newspaper clipping describing their lovely wedding.

Thank you to everyone who participated in yesterday’s What Is It Wednesday! The picture we shared was of an antique eye wash cup.

These cups are filled with water or a solution and used to rinse the eye and alleviate irritation.

While eye wash cups are still made today, eye drops are more commonly used.

Happy Teacup Tuesday! This week we are sharing a Royal Albert cup that features beautiful yellow roses. This set is in the “Tea Rose” pattern, which was also produced with a black background, either all black with the rose inside or with the rose on the outside.

The pattern is from the 1940s. The registration mark comes between 1941 and 1942. This cup is in the Countess shape, but the pattern was also produced in the Avon shape (footed with a shallow bowl) and Malvern (taller and fluted). In the 1950s, Tea Rose was part of a set of 6 produced in the Smooth shape, along with American Beauty Rose, Barbara Ann, Evening Rhapsody, Masquerade, and White Dogwood.
