April 19 2025 is 250 years to the day when Col Pickering, in his office at the Registry of Deeds just next door to the Pickering House, was alerted by Captain Epes of Danvers that "the British troops had marched from Boston to Lexington and had attacked the militia". Epes was given the order by Pickering to march the Danvers militia to Lexington without delay. Colonel Timothy Pickering rushed from his office to the town square where he mustered all the men he could to march on Lexington. His actions in events that followed would change his life and influence all of ours to this day...

Soon:
"Unnumber'd flowers reflecting in their tints
The hues of heaven; while every zephyr near
Bears on his wings their perfumes. Then the world
Is full of music..."
-composed at the Pickering House by Henry Pickering (1781-1838)

Deepest thanks to this past weekend's speakers; Ken Glover, Joseph Varga and Judy Anderson who gave bookended talks regarding the fight for Democracy and Liberty.

Ken and Joseph updated us on the ACTIVE fight to maintain the Democracy and Liberty the Ukrainians' have worked so hard to achieve and how our help is needed more than ever.

Judy Anderson, a Marblehead Historian, gave a lovingly detailed and illustrated talk on the historic fight for Democracy that formed our own Nation; and the local citizens who stepped up for what they believed in.

Both talks are reminders of just how important individual actions were in the formation of a democratic state and how continual action by every generation is required to keep it.

Both events were recorded and the videos will be posted on our website under a future announcement.

Don't miss our event this Sunday! While the date of Leslie's Retreat has come and gone, that doesn't mean the citizens of Salem and Marblehead going about their daily lives as normal at this time in 1775. They were (likely) freaking out!

April 19th and the 'shot heard round the world' had yet to happen, meaning the peace that was made at the North Bridge with Lt. Colonel Leslie (pictured here) in Salem on Feb 26 was balancing on a bayonet's edge; each passing day full of tension from the unknown...

Which is why we're keeping the events of the 250th anniversary of Leslie's Retreat going and diving even deeper. THIS SUNDAY 3/9 Historian Judy Anderson will shed light on who Colonel Leslie was. Where did his troops land in Marblehead? What was Marblehead like in 1775? This illustrated talk, unlike any other about Feb 26, will discuss the significant differences between Salem and Marblehead before, during and after the American Revolution.

Join us this Saturday 3/8 at noon to hear local humanitarian and historian Kenneth Glover's most recent experience helping the citizens and soldiers near the front-line of Ukraine. These deeply personal and human stories help us understand the humanity of this horrible war and what is at stake for our fellow defenders for democracy.
100% the proceeds will support the citizens of Ukraine.
Doors at 11:30, talk starts at noon at the Pickering House.

Get your tickets for this Sunday's Chowder Lecture!

In observance of Black History Month we are recognizing one of America’s greatest singers: Ella Fitzgerald!
Ticket's here: here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/qqp2qjv

Music Historian Bill Sano will give a one-hour presentation on the life and career of this great vocalist. We’ll travel all the way from her 1917 birth in Newport News, VA through her years growing up in the slums of Harlem, to her association with the renowned Chick Webb Orchestra, to amputation of both her legs in 1993, to her death from stroke in Beverly Hills at age 79. This “Queen of Jazz” was noted for her diction, intonation, and absolute pitch. She had the ability to imitate any instrument of the band. It is said that Ella Fitzgerald didn’t invent s**t singing—she perfected it! Many examples of her marvelous voice will augment the presentation.

Doors open and wicked-good chowder is served at 11:30, the talk starts at 12, noon.
