Happy 100th Birthday! On September 13, 1924 a group of ladies in Salem met at the Salem Ward Relief Society building (located where the city offices are today). Their purpose was to organize their own camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers after Martha Christensen and Rachael Hanks applied to the county organization for a Salem Chapter. Caroline Hatch Hopper was elected Captain, Emma Curtis Hanks 1st Vice Capt. and Rachael Davis Hanks 2nd Vice Capt. with Lillie Hopper as Secretary and Treasurer and Clara Soren McQuivey as Assistant. Margrette Martin Taylor was Historian, Daisy Gardner Stone was Registrar and Mary J. McRae Pierce was Chaplain with Ada Jackman Gardner as Chorister, Lettie Davis Peterson Organist and Mary Underwood Hanks as Librarian and Relic Keeper.

Many wonderful ladies have joined this organization. In the early years, they would trade off meeting at each others homes each month. They enjoyed learning about their pioneer heritage and preserving the memories for future generations. They served the people of Salem by directing Pioneer Day activities in July. Life stories of our local pioneers were written and gathered, also a history of our town. They were instrumental in preserving and dedicating our monuments - the log cabin, school bell, old fort and tree, now located at Heritage Park on 300 West. Each of these has their own story to tell.

There are 2 camps now in Salem...the Salem Camp and Mt. Loafer Camp. We still meet once a month to honor and preserve our past. We love this growing town and welcome all to learn how it became the City of Peace.

New rose bushes were planted this fall at the back of the cabin. Salem City installed a drip system and mulched around the bushes. They will look so nice next year!

I am the daughter
of a daughter.
Who is the daughter
of a daughter.
Who is also the daughter
of a daughter.
Some of us are mothers
but all of us are daughters,
all birthed through lines
that weave back to
that First Mother.
All connected from
the very beginning.
All connected in the now.
Mothers,
Daughters,
Grandmothers,
Great Grandmothers,
Great Great Grandmothers.
All daughters born from
One. Original. Egg.
from
One. Original. Woman.
So why the separation?
Why the animosity toward each other?
Why the arguing and fighting,
back-stabbing and lack of support?
The next time you see another woman,
look in her eyes and see the
Ancestral Lines – the lines of women –
that lead back to you.
Where are we going Mother?
And how will we get there Sister?
By staying connected Daughter
and allowing for difference.
For we are each one,
after all,
all Daughters
of the
One Mother.
