"An Interactive Evening with Benjamin Franklin," presented by Bruce Williams, Attorney-at-Law.

Monthly Meetings are free and open to the public every second Tuesday of each month from March through December. After a brief business meeting, we sponsor a program where you have the unique opportunity to hear from various speakers who love and share their knowledge of historical places and events.

Bruce Williams, also known as C. Bruce Williams, resides and works in Salem. He has been licensed for 42+ years specializing in Criminal Defense, Personal Injuries, Wills and Living Wills.

Benjamin Franklin, a printer by trade, a scientist by fame, and a man of action by all accounts, continues to shape American thinking and action. He was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts, and became one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was a printer, author, inventor, scientist, diplomat, politician, philanthropist and business man known for his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence. At the age of 70 years he was the oldest of the 56 delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War, before his death on April 17, 1790.

Our meeting room is in the lower level of the Dale Shaffer Research Library with the door facing 239 South Lundy. Parking is available in the municipal lot across the street.

Ghost Trolley Tours
Lower level of the Dale Shaffer Research Library at 239 South Lundy

The Quakertown Trolley takes participants out of the downtown area to famous graves and other "haunted" areas. A guide tells true ghost stories about these places and events in and around Salem. Participants should wear good walking shoes as there are occasions that riders can choose to exit the trolley.

Meet Your Guide: Sally Renee
Sally Renee is a vocalist, actress, director, and educator with a passion for storytelling in all its forms. She teaches choir, maintains a private voice studio, and constantly fills her free time with theatre, music, and books.

A lifelong lover of history, mystery, and a good story, Sally Renee brings her performance background to Salem’s ghost tour, blending local history, folklore, humor, and a healthy respect for the unknown. She believes the best stories don’t simply tell us what happened; they make us wonder what might have happened.

Join Sally Renee aboard the historic trolley as she takes you through Salem after dark and shares some of the stories that have lingered long after the people and the places they came from.

"Sojourner Truth, American Abolitionist," will be presented by Eddie Murphy, Historical Re-enactor.

Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree around 1797, escaped slavery in 1826 and became a prominent abolitionist, women’s rights advocate and powerful orator. She lived in Salem during the 1850s, becoming active in the abolitionist movement and women’s rights advocacy.

Truth is perhaps best known for her 1851 speech, “Ain’t I A Woman?”, delivered at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron. She spent her life advocating for the abolition of slavery and equal rights.

Eddie Murphy, a Wellsville native, returned to the village after nearly four decades in Southern California. She is currently president of the Wellsville Community Foundation. She previously presented a program on Harriet Tubman at the Salem Historical Society in July 2025.

Salem Historical Society Underground Railroad Trolley Tours have openings for the September Tours on Sunday, September 6 at 1pm and Sunday September 20 at 1pm. The cost is $15 per person. To reserve a seat, call 330-337-8514.

A small number of seats have opened up on this Sunday, August 16 tour. Call if you want to secure these seats or stop in 10-15 minute prior to 1pm to be seated after all reservations are honored.

NEW: If you have a Passport to Your National Parks® book, be sure to bring it with you on the tour! You'll receive a free ink stamp featuring the date and the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour Salem designation.

An Underground Railroad Trolley Tour is scheduled for
Sunday, July 26 at 1pm

Cost: $15 per person

To make a reservation, call 330-337-8514. Walk-ins are also welcome after reservations are met.

Parking is available in the municipal lot across from Lundy, and trolley loads at 239 South Lundy outside the gift shop.

Plan on arriving about 15 minutes early to make your payment and get seated on the trolley.
