Presentation spotlight: Charles E. Peterson and the Historic American Buildings Survey in Ste. Genevieve, presented by James Baker.
The program will include a brief history of Charles E. Peterson's career in historic preservation and his association with the National Park Service during his time in St. Louis during the early development of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (The Arch). It will focus on his early research and interest in Ste. Genevieve during the 1930's, and the role of Ste. Genevieve in his landmark proposal for the creation of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1933.

Presentation Spotlight: The Role of the Revolutionary War and its Veterans in American Settlement of Southeast Missouri, presented by Bill Eddleman.
The events of the American Revolution and its aftermath led to American settlement of Missouri. In the case of southeastern Missouri, Spanish officials founded New Madrid in 1788 on the site of a village settled by Shawnee-Delaware-Creek-Cherokee bands fleeing west of the Mississippi in the early 1780s. A Revolutionary War veteran, George Morgan, became the Spanish empresario in 1788 and recruited American settlers to the area. Cape Girardeau, founded in 1793 by Louis Lorimier, a British supporter who came to Missouri after American troops burned his trading post in the old Northwest, welcomed American families headed by many Revolutionary War patriots beginning in 1795. Similarly, Americans established several settlements in the Ste. Genevieve District during the Spanish regime. This presentation details how the Revolution facilitated settlement in Spanish Louisiana and discusses the factors attracting Americans to the region during this time. The background and Revolutionary War service of some leading American settlers of the Ste. Genevieve District provide examples.

Presentation spotlight: The Long Tannery, presented by Ryan Johnston D.C., Ed.D.
Dr. Ryan Johnston will present a detailed analysis of Farmington’s Long Tannery and provide context regarding the Long family’s contribution to the overall operation of the Ste. Genevieve to Iron Mountain Plank Road. Recently discovered artifacts, including a family letter to Phillip G. Long from 1836 and the Long Tannery business ledger from 1856 to 1860, have shed light on this vital industry. With prominent customers including the corporation of Chouteau Harrison and Valle, the broader impact of this local tannery will be explored. Join us for an exciting discussion on regional development during the height of the Plank Road operation.

Presentation Spotlight: Bauvais-Amoureux House: A biography of its occupants and history, presented by Melissa Gengler of Historic Resources Group, Inc.
The presenter was part of a multi-discipline team contracted by the National Park Service to prepare historic structures reports for four properties in Ste. Genevieve. The Bauvais-Amoureux House was one of those properties. This presentation will discuss the complicated ownership of the residence, its historical significance, and its association with the fascinating families that either owned or occupied the property. Documentation will begin with the construction of the extremely rare and architecturally significant poteux-en-terre building in 1792 and extend through the current day. Intricacies like spelling a name and construction events through time will be explored.

Presentation spotlight: Before Google Maps, Mapping the Illinois Country before 1804, presented by Robert J. Mueller

This presentation will include maps of the Illinois Country from the time of Pere Marquette up to the Louisiana Purchase, information on the cartographers who drew them, and how these maps help us interpret our history. Some of these maps were drawn by travelers as they explored the middle Mississippi Valley and later published in Europe. The presentation will also demonstrate other maps published by cartographers who had never set foot in the Illinois Country. All provide an insight into Ste. Genevieve and the greater area of the mid- Mississippi Valley as perceived by outsiders during the French and Spanish colonial periods.
