🌧️📚 Step into a flooded San Francisco in Awake in the Floating City, Susanna Kwan’s moving debut about art, grief, memory, and human connection.

When Bo, an artist struggling to create after her mother’s disappearance, becomes a caregiver for 130-year-old Mia, their unexpected bond inspires her to preserve the stories of a woman—and a city—at risk of being lost forever.

XIA Books will be at the East Side Freedom Library August 20th for the "Third Thursdays for Housing Justice – 'Blue Houses: A Reflection on Home'" event 🏡

Thursday, August 20, 2026 | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM | East Side Freedom Library

Join Kao Kalia Yang and Katrina Mendoza as they tell stories of their different blue houses from their childhoods. A chance to reflect on what a home can mean for yourself and your neighbors.

Kao Kalia Yang and Katrina Mendoza are two powerful women who both have childhood memories of a blue house. Kao Kalia grew up in a blue house on St Paul’s East Side, and Katrina’s abuela lived in a blue house in the West Side neighborhood. Each house was a site of safety and community for them and their communities. Join us to remember why home will always be a magical place.

Join us for an evening of food, music, and recollection. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item that reminds them of home.
