⏳ Less than 2 weeks left — our public Call for Art closes August 24.

Solidarity Street Gallery 2026 returns to ArT at 967 Payne and Payne Avenue this October 16–18, and we're inviting artists to help us build this year's 'Common Ground.'

The theme is a wide-open invitation: what does it mean to take loving care of our one shared home — planet Earth — and to find common ground with one another? It holds room for awe and for alarm, for celebration and for protest, for the cosmic and the intensely local. Whatever your medium, whatever your register — literal or abstract, tender or urgent — there's a place for your vision.

Because here's the thing: Common Ground isn't ours to define. It's something we make together, piece by piece, artist by artist. The exhibition becomes whatever you bring to it — and it won't be complete without your voice.

🎨 ANNOUNCEMENT | NEW EXHIBITION: STILL LIFE 🎨

We're delighted to announce our next show at ArT @ 967 Payne — new paintings by Alek Buzhaker, opening Friday, September 18! ✨

A master of one of art's most time-honored genres, Alek finds beauty in the everyday: flowers and fruit, glass and ceramics, fabric and metal. 🍇🏺 Drawing inspiration from the Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th century, he brings their timeless command of light and shadow into compositions that are entirely his own — each canvas a quiet study in harmony, texture, and color.

Born in Crimea and trained in Leningrad, Alek emigrated to the United States in 1978 and built a career in graphic design and advertising before returning, in recent years, to his first love: traditional painting. This exhibition brings together fresh work following his acclaimed 2022 solo exhibition at The Museum of Russian Art. 🖤

✨ ABOUT OUR NEXT FEATURED ARTIST

Meet Steve Smith — the artist behind 'THROUGH THE EYES OF MY MOTHER,' opening at ArT @ 967 Payne on Friday, August 7. 🦅

Steve has been drawing since childhood, when a third-grade teacher handed him a little book of blank pages so he could draw instead of filling out worksheets — and by eleventh grade, he was painting murals throughout his school. That early spark became a lifelong calling. He earned his BFA from the University of Minnesota, where mentors deepened not just his technical skill but his understanding of art as a way of seeing.

His path has been anything but ordinary. Steve taught at Red School House, an alternative school grounded in North American Indigenous culture, then went on to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology — spending his career weaving together art and healing, a practice he continues to this day.

But the deepest influence on his work is his mother: a strong and wise Indigenous woman who taught him to look, and to truly see — to recognize that all things are alive, all things are related, and the earth herself is sacred. Steve paints less by plan than by discovery, describing his process as an intuitive conversation between the artist, the canvas, and the Spirits. The result is work alive with owls, cranes, dragonflies, and butterflies — vivid, tender, and quietly profound.

🦅 New Exhibition: THROUGH THE EYES OF MY MOTHER 🦋

We're honored to announce our next show at ArT @ 967 Payne — paintings and sketches by Steve Smith, one of our own resident artists — opening Friday, August 7! ✨

The title is a tribute to Steve's mother, a strong and wise Indigenous woman who taught him to look — and to truly see: to recognize that all things are alive, all things related, and the earth herself sacred. 🌎 His vibrant work brings those teachings to life — owls, cranes, loons, dragonflies, and butterflies gathered in natural harmony. In many paintings, his mother appears as the Eagle, honoring her clan and the truth he holds: that we are all related.

A University of Minnesota Fine Arts grad who, after teaching art, went on get advanced degrees in clinical psychology and to a career integrating art and healing, Steve paints intuitively — a conversation, as he describes it, between the artist, the canvas, and the Spirits. 🖤

Come meet Steve, experience his unique and powerful work, and join us for a warm evening of art, inspiriation, and community.

SAVE THE DATE — October 16–18, 2026

This fall, Payne Avenue transforms into an indoor / outdoor art gallery and community celebration once more. Solidarity Street Gallery returns for its seventh year with a theme that belongs to every one of us: Common Ground.

Common Ground is an invitation to consider what it means to take loving care of our one shared home — Planet Earth. It's a wide tent, with room for the climate scientist and the backyard gardener, the activist and the artist who simply loves the turning of the October leaves. And here on the East Side — one of St. Paul's most diverse neighborhoods, and one that knows the value of clean air and safe water firsthand — caring for our environment isn't abstract. It's local, it's personal, and it's something we can do together.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
For three days, five walkable blocks of Payne Avenue come alive — high-quality art in galleries, storefront windows and on sidewalks, an invited gallery exhibition, live music and poetry, and, new this year, an environmental mini fair where you can connect, learn, and find your own way to make a difference. Free, family-friendly, and rooted in the cultures that call the East Side home.

ARTISTS — put your work in front of thousands and lend your voice to one of the most important conversations of our time. Emerging or established, all media welcome.

LOCAL BUSINESSES — host a site again and become a gallery for the weekend: new faces, more foot traffic, and a starring role in the heart of the neighborhood.

ENCIRONMENTAL, CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL GROUPS: Environmental, cultural & educational groups — set up a booth at the mini fair and connect directly with a curious, engaged community.

Next Friday, June 19, we open BLACKNIFICENT Vol. 3, Ron Brown's 20-year retrospective — and we're opening it on Juneteenth on purpose.

Here's the thing about Juneteenth: it's not a day to scroll past. It's a day to show up — to be in a room with your people, in front of work that tells the truth about where we've been and where we're going.

That's what this is. Twenty years of Ron's vision across canvas, hand-crafted furniture, and wearable art — a sacred Black living room, a love letter to hip-hop, a conversation with the ancestors. Hip-hop and jazz moving through the room. Real art. Real community. Real history, made present.
