Real Fun: Our Wisconsin Fall Train Trip Story

The Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway is one of the signature attractions of MTM, and it brings thousands of visitors to the St. Croix Valley each year. Is it June yet?...

We are hopeful that we will be able to start running our trains in Osceola starting June 6th. That includes our scenic train rides each weekend, along with our special trains including Dinner, Brunch, Pizza, and Wine Trains!

As always, we are adhering to the recommendations set forth by the State of Minnesota and the CDC regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety and health of our guests and our staff are our number one priority.

As time goes on we will continue to monitor the situation. Our target date to open in Osceola, with the current information we have, as mentioned above is Saturday, June 6.

A recent $10,000 grant awarded by the Emery Rail Heritage Trust will enable the Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway to make progress towards having a mini-Great Northern streamline trainset.

The March 2020 award will help restore the Great Northern 454-A locomotive which will be a cornerstone of
MTM’s fleet of Great Northern locomotives and passenger cars.

“We are grateful to the Emery Rail Heritage Trust for their support of this project,” said Scott Hippert, MTM Executive Director. “Once complete, our riders will be able to see and experience firsthand the Great Northern cars that ran on the Empire Builder, pulled by one of the icons of the streamliner era.”

The Minnesota Transportation Museum is seeking additional support to complete the project.

MTM volunteers will spend at least 2000 hours dedicated to this historic restoration. The 454-A is one of only four remaining Great Northern cab units.

UPDATE: Museum closure due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

(March 16, 2020)

The leadership of the Minnesota Transportation Museum (MTM) continues to follow the advice of health officials who are actively monitoring the of the progression of the novel
coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease.

Therefore, we are taking the following steps in the
interests of the health and well being of our volunteers, visitors, staff and the community.

The Minnesota Transportation Museum located at the Jackson Street Roundhouse in Saint Paul will close to the public effective immediately through March 31, 2020. We will monitor the situation to determine if further closure is required.

We hope that the coronavirus presents only a short-term interruption and look forward to welcoming our visitors, volunteers, and patrons back as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause.

For those staff, members and volunteers of MTM who regularly work in our shop areas or those with small meetings scheduled, access will continue to be granted for now because of lesser risk.

This could change.

We encourage you to practice social distancing if you are at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. If you are in a designated high-risk group, please stay home. Please checked with your
supervisor to make certain that building access is available.
This is an unprecedented moment for each of us.

We are grateful for the cooperation and support of the entire MTM community and our visitors as we take steps to confront the spread of this virus.

For future updates on this situation, please visit our website at www.trainride.org.

Sincerely,
Scott L. Hippert

❗️❗️MTM response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)❗️❗️

(March 12, 2020)

The Board of Directors and Staff of the Minnesota Transportation Museum (MTM)
are following health officials worldwide who are actively monitoring the local and global health
status of the novel coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease. MTM is taking proactive steps to
minimize health and safety risks to our visitors, volunteers, staff and the larger community.

While we know that the situation with COVID-19 is continuously evolving, at the present time MTM
does not expect any interruptions to our hours or operations. We look forward to welcoming our
visitors, volunteers, and patrons as usual, but asking that everyone follow the recommendations of
the Center for Disease Control and local health officials to protect your personal health and the
well-being of your families and neighbors.

With encouragement from the Executive Committee of our Board of Directors, MTM is taking extra
steps to maintain the cleanliness of our facilities, to disinfect, to make hand sanitizer readily
available, and encouraging our volunteers to be a resource to anyone feeling ill or needing
assistance.

This is an unprecedented moment for our community, our region, our nation, and the wider world.
We are grateful for the cooperation and support of the entire MTM community and our visitors as
we take steps to confront the spread of this virus.

Since this is a changing situation, we will maintain vigilance and provide any future updates on our
website at www.trainride.org

Sincerely,
Scott L. Hippert

🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃

Did you know that we operate a real railroad less than an hour away from the Twin Cities, entirely with trained and certified volunteers?

It's TRUE and it's a LOT OF FUN! Make an afternoon of it and come ride our trains!

The Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway is part of the Minnesota Transportation Museum and operates every year from May until the end of October. We utilize the historic Soo Line railroad depot in Osceola, Wisconsim and most of our trips travel between Osceola and Marine on Saint Croix, Minnesota.

Dinner trains, wine trains (NEW THIS YEAR), pizza trains for the family (kids LOVE having their own pizza while riding our train), and many more fun events throughout the summer. We also have our normally scheduled train rides every weekend throughout our season.

We host private events and charter our train out as well for tourist groups, historical societies, wedding parties, birthday parties and more.

If you have never ridden a train with us, we highly recommend bringing the family out for a ride.

Learn more by clicking the "BOOK NOW" button on our page!

Join us tomorrow for our first of two Tot's and Trains Children's Program events for the month of February at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. This program happens every first and third Wednesday of the month from 10 A.M. until noon!

We'll read stories, craft, and eat tasty snacks right here at the Minnesota Transportation Museum's historic Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul! We even use one of our vintage Great Northern Railway passenger cars as a play area and lounge!

We are located less than a mile northeast of the Minnesota State Capitol.

After the fun, feel free to stay and explore the rest of our museum. We are open on Wednesday's until 4 P.M.

MTM is pleased to announce the acquisition of CF7 MNTX 454, former GLLX 2627 which last served on the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, Pennsylvania.

Originally built as Santa Fe 21, an EMD F3A, the unit will serve as a major parts source to restore MTM’s Great Northern F7A 454A to operation. The unit is currently en-route from its former home to MTM’s Jackson Street Roundhouse near downtown Saint Paul. Once all necessary parts are secured from the unit, the remainder will be scrapped.

Approved by the MTM Board in 2018, this acquisition would not have been possible without the generosity of the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust and the BNSF Foundation. Many thanks to all who are making this occasion possible!
