May 26 was the feast day of St. Philip Neri, (1515-1595) a gifted orator who is widely remembered for his notable gifts of wisdom, humor and joy. Born in Florence, he spent most of his adult life as a public figure in Rome, both before and after his ordination to the priesthood, routinely striking up conversation with the rich and the poor alike, leading many toward a “new and better way of life” as followers of Jesus. St. Philip Neri is the patron saint of humor and joy, and my brief summary hardly introduces the story of this brilliant and holy man.

May 22 is the feast day of St. Rita of Cascia. She is the patron saint of hopeless cases, difficult marriages, and parenthood -- patronages that reflect the real circumstances of her life. In prayer, St. Rita received a stigmata, a wound of the crown of thorns, which remained unhealed on her forehead for years until her death on May 22, 1457. Her incorruptible body can be viewed in the Basilica of St. Rita in Cascia, Italy.

May 21 is the feast day of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, (1907-1943) an Austrian farmer and martyr who became famous for his refusal to serve in Hitler’s army during World War II. Despite immense pressure, including from his community and family, Jägerstätter resisted conscription, citing his Catholic faith and moral convictions. His decision led to his arrest, and he was executed by the N***s in 1943. Beatified by the Catholic Church in 2007, Jägerstätter is remembered for his unwavering commitment to conscience and the sanctity of life, serving as an example of courage in the face of tyranny. He is the patron saint of conscientious objectors.

“Let us love our enemies, bless those who curse us, pray for those who persecute us. For love will conquer and will endure for all eternity. And happy are they who live and die in God’s love.”
(from one of Franz Jägerstätter's last letters)

May 16 is the feast day of St. Brendan the Navigator (484-578) who is known as one of the “12 Apostles of Ireland” due to his founding of numerous schools and monasteries throughout that region, most famously at Clonfert on the River Shannon. His many voyages led to the founding of churches and monasteries in Wales, England, and northern France.

May 15th was the feast day of St. Isidore the Farmer, (1070-1130 AD) a Spanish saint known for his deep faith, humility, and dedication to his work. Born to poor parents, he spent his life working on a farm near Madrid, often taking time to pray and attend Mass. Despite his humble status, he was recognized for performing miracles, such as helping his fellow workers and animals in miraculous ways. Isidore is the patron saint of farmers and rural communities. His life bears witness to the sanctity of everyday labor.

May 10th is the feast day of St. Damien of Molokai. I worked this drawing from one of the few photos of St. Damien from when he served the isolated community on Molokai, and a photo in which the ravages of leprosy are evident. He is a standard bearer of self-sacrificial love, of living for others, of following the Lord with eyes fixed on heaven.
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." (John 15:13)
