May 26 was the feast day of St. Philip Neri, (1515-1595) a gifted orator who is widely remembered for his notable gifts of wisdom, humor and joy. Born in Florence, he spent most of his adult life as a public figure in Rome, both before and after his ordination to the priesthood, routinely striking up conversation with the rich and the poor alike, leading many toward a “new and better way of life” as followers of Jesus. St. Philip Neri is the patron saint of humor and joy, and my brief summary hardly introduces the story of this brilliant and holy man.
