Burl Gallery welcomes the “REJECTED”

Like the Salon des Refusés of 1863 in Paris, Burl Gallery hosts the ‘rejects’ of the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition and puts the authority of judgement back in the hands of their community.

The fine arts department of the Minnesota State Fair presents an annual exhibition that is the result of a juried competition. Participation is open to all living residents of Minnesota, and each may submit one work for consideration. But! Only the works selected by the jurors are displayed in the Fine Arts Center during the fair. In 2026, a total of 3,185 pieces were submitted and only 343 were accepted.

EXHIBIT DATES: 8/22/26 - 9/26/26
Gallery Hours: Sat/Sun, 10am-4pm

*Free and Open to the Public

In art, “aesthetic essence” refers to the fundamental qualities that give an artwork its artistic merit and unique identity, such as its emotional impact, beauty, or symbolic meaning.  It is the intrinsic, intangible quality that defines the work, which can be felt as a “good feeling” when experienced.  It is the crucial element that transcends a work’s function, purpose, or mere physical composition to create a profound and universal connection with the viewer.

“Art is ruled uniquely by the imagination. Images are its only wealth. It does not classify objects, it does not pronounce them real or imaginary, does not qualify them does not define them; it feels and presents them”.  ~Benedetto Croce
