FROM THE ARCHIVES: This page from the 1975 Radio Shack comic, “The Science Fair Story of Electronics: Man’s Discovery That Changed the World,” demonstrates the influential role of the breadboard in early radio and electronics. The breadboard is considered an essential building block for circuitry and provides an accessible and flexible way for amateur inventors to experiment and build their skills.

Learn how to build your own breadboard at our next Crash Course on November 21st!

“There was no choice but to be pioneers”

Margaret Hamilton, a prominent computer scientist who helped NASA land on the moon, passed away on Sept 30 at the age of 90.

Hamilton’s first entry point into computer programming came in 1959. While attending MIT in Boston, she worked a temporary job in the meteorology department, where she developed a program to predict the weather. When MIT announced that they were looking for people to develop programming for the Apollo project, Hamilton was the first programmer hired. She was NASA’s first “software engineer,” a title she invented herself. In 1961, she was contracted by NASA to write the Apollo program’s guidance system, which would eventually bring the first astronauts to the moon. By 1965, she became the head of her own team at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory (now named the Draper Laboratory).

“From my own perspective, the software experience itself was at least as exciting as the events surrounding the mission,” Hamilton told MIT News in 2009, “There was no second chance.”

Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 from President Barack Obama and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2022. In 2017, she was included as a mini figure in LEGO’s “Women in Space” collection alongside Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Nancy Grace Roman, and Katherine Johnson.
