Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art

Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of 18th, 19th, and 20th century American art in the Midwest. Through special exhibitions, educational programs, and publications, the Albrecht-Kemper serves as a cultural arts center.
(114)

The museum originated in 1913 with the foundation of the St. Joseph Art League, twelve women who sought to increase public awareness and understanding of the arts. With the hope of establishing a public art museum in St. Joseph, the League acquired the William Merritt Chase painting 'Venetian Balcony'. The purchase, made in 1915 with funds raised at performances, teas and a special showing of the painting in a local department store, became the first, and most beloved work in the Museum's permanent collection. The League opened the Albrecht Gallery in 1966 in the former home of Mr. and Mrs. William Albrecht. At the initiation of a major building expansion in 1991, the Museum became The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, honoring the patronage of Mr. R. Crosby Kemper. PERMANENT COLLECTION: Through the generosity of the Kemper family, foundations, and many other enthusiastic supporters, the Museum's collection has grown to include an extraordinary group of colonial portraits, as well as distinguished examples of American Impressionism and the Boston School. TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS: In the gallery you will discover temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Each of these exhibitions is on display for 60-90 days at a time and include an opening night of appetizers, snacks, music, fun and a chance to meet the artist. For the next upcoming temporary exhibition please call the front desk at 233-7003. SPECAIL EVENTS: The facilities of the Albrecht-Kemper are available for rent by individuals, organization, agencies and groups for private or public events. To plan an event at the Museum, contact the Director of Special Events at 233-7003 ext. 305. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: Develop your own creativity and appreciation for art with a schedule of art-orientated activities, lectures, events, art classes and workshops for children and adults! With a museum membership you will receive discounts and advance notice on all educational activities. BRADLEY ART LIBRARY: The Museum's reference library contains 2,500 volumes, a collection of periodicals and other materials relating to the permanent collection and the history of art. Readers and scholars may visit and utilize these references during regular museum hours. PLEASE CONSIDER MEMBERSHIP: Museum memberships are available at various levels and entitle members to benefits including free admission to the museum for a year, a subscription to ARTMATTERS (the Museum's quarterly newsletter), a chance to exhibit original artwork in the Annual Membership Show, discounts for art classes, 10% off in the Gift Shop, as well as invitations to exhibitions, previews, parties and special events. In 1975, 12 artists were asked to create an artwork that answered the question “What does independence mean to you?”
Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) created "The 1920s….The Migrants Cast Their Ballots" as his answer to the question. Lawrence revisited a subject from his career-making series of paintings in the 1940s, "The Migration of the Negro," that told the story of Southern African-Americans migrating to the cities of the north for economic opportunity in the early part of the 20th Century. The chance to exercise their voting rights was one battleground in the long, tumultuous fight for inclusion and equality in American society that Lawrence spent his career exploring.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art strives to be a place where our community can find connections and express their own voices through the visual arts.

Vincent Campanella was born in New York City in 1915 and spent nearly 30 years as a professor at Park Univeristy. He studied art in the traditional Renaissance manner, but by the 1930s the influence of Picasso and Cezanne’s abstractions of form are apparent in his work. This painting reflects Campanella’s interest in the people and landscapes of Wyoming mine country where he spent time as a WPA artist in the 1930s.

From volunteering for tours, prepping the museum for events, or just helping out wherever they can, our docents at AKMA are amazing! We don't know what we'd do without them. This week we are featuring our docent Wendy Tyrrell.

"Since I first started volunteering seven years ago, I’ve worked on many things such as helping with mailings, cleaning the tables in the cafe and seats in the auditorium, decorating and many hours in the gardens and grounds. I enjoyed it all because I hoped I was helping at a special place and everyone made me feel wanted and appreciated."

If you want more information on becoming a docent, please contact [email protected].

Art has often been a force for change and a way to explore the complex problems facing the world. With #climateMW, museums around the world are looking ways our collections address the issue of climate change. Jacqueline Bishop, a graduate of St. Joseph’s Central High School, has spent much of her career exploring issues of deforestation, ecological destruction and extinction in places like Latin America, Asia, and the Louisiana swamps near her home in New Orleans. Sama uma reminds us of the interconnectedness of nature, including humanity, and how that fragile system can be deeply affected by climate change.

The AKMA has over 3,000 objects in its collection. Some of these objects aren’t often on view because they do not fit with our focus on American art. One such object is this ancient Egyptian ushabti figure. These figures were widely used in burials to be servants of the dead in the afterlife.

Missouri Business Podcast The crew and I ran around the area this weekend as a trial run of our upcoming Commerce Connection Quest. We managed to take check-in photos at 150 businesses around town and the surrounding area. Our participants in next month’s Quest only need to get to all 100 vendors that will take part to earn the vacation stay prize. This is an example of how a post will work. That’s all they have to do to check-in. We hope that you will choose to support the community in playing in this fun event and give the residents something fun to do. Even if you do not play, we would love your support however you can. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s posts over the next month – John Piazza Norton
