The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of 18th, 19th, and 20th century American art in the Midwest. Through special exhibitions, educational programs, and publications, the Albrecht-Kemper serves as a cultural arts center.
(21)
The museum originated in 1913 with the foundation of the St. Joseph Art League, twelve women who sought to increase public awareness and understanding of the arts. With the hope of establishing a public art museum in St. Joseph, the League acquired the William Merritt Chase painting 'Venetian Balcony'. The purchase, made in 1915 with funds raised at performances, teas and a special showing of the painting in a local department store, became the first, and most beloved work in the Museum's permanent collection. The League opened the Albrecht Gallery in 1966 in the former home of Mr. and Mrs. William Albrecht. At the initiation of a major building expansion in 1991, the Museum became The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, honoring the patronage of Mr. R. Crosby Kemper. PERMANENT COLLECTION: Through the generosity of the Kemper family, foundations, and many other enthusiastic supporters, the Museum's collection has grown to include an extraordinary group of colonial portraits, as well as distinguished examples of American Impressionism and the Boston School. TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS: In the gallery you will discover temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Each of these exhibitions is on display for 60-90 days at a time and include an opening night of appetizers, snacks, music, fun and a chance to meet the artist. For the next upcoming temporary exhibition please call the front desk at 233-7003. SPECAIL EVENTS: The facilities of the Albrecht-Kemper are available for rent by individuals, organization, agencies and groups for private or public events. To plan an event at the Museum, contact the Director of Special Events at 233-7003 ext. 305. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: Develop your own creativity and appreciation for art with a schedule of art-orientated activities, lectures, events, art classes and workshops for children and adults! With a museum membership you will receive discounts and advance notice on all educational activities. BRADLEY ART LIBRARY: The Museum's reference library contains 2,500 volumes, a collection of periodicals and other materials relating to the permanent collection and the history of art. Readers and scholars may visit and utilize these references during regular museum hours. PLEASE CONSIDER MEMBERSHIP: Museum memberships are available at various levels and entitle members to benefits including free admission to the museum for a year, a subscription to ARTMATTERS (the Museum's quarterly newsletter), a chance to exhibit original artwork in the Annual Membership Show, discounts for art classes, 10% off in the Gift Shop, as well as invitations to exhibitions, previews, parties and special events. Everyone had a great time at Wanda Taylor’s Colored Pencil Workshop last week! It was our first venture into holding a virtual class on Zoom. We learned new things about holding a class online and everyone created a beautiful drawing by the end of the day!
Wanda’s next workshop is Wednesday, February 17, and will focus on a still life with the artist’s choice of subject matter.

Robin VanHoozer (Robin VanHoozer Art) of St. Joseph works with encaustic, a mix of hot wax and pigment that goes back 2,500 years. And she uses encaustic for more than the classic paintings on wood – like the multimedia in her 2019 solo exhibit “Echoes Through Time” at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Inspired by her grandmother’s journal, she muses on “the invisible routine of essential tasks typically performed by women.” Here’s “Nell,” encaustic, paper, thread, vintage lace, and photographs. Ms. VanHoozer is one of our very first Featured Artists. Meet all four of December’s artists here: missouriartscouncil.org/featured-artist
