Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art

Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of 18th, 19th, and 20th century American art in the Midwest. Through special exhibitions, educational programs, and publications, the Albrecht-Kemper serves as a cultural arts center.

The museum originated in 1913 with the foundation of the St. Joseph Art League, twelve women who sought to increase public awareness and understanding of the arts. With the hope of establishing a public art museum in St. Joseph, the League acquired the William Merritt Chase painting 'Venetian Balcony'. The purchase, made in 1915 with funds raised at performances, teas and a special showing of the painting in a local department store, became the first, and most beloved work in the Museum's permanent collection. The League opened the Albrecht Gallery in 1966 in the former home of Mr. and Mrs. William Albrecht. At the initiation of a major building expansion in 1991, the Museum became The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, honoring the patronage of Mr. R. Crosby Kemper. PERMANENT COLLECTION: Through the generosity of the Kemper family, foundations, and many other enthusiastic supporters, the Museum's collection has grown to include an extraordinary group of colonial portraits, as well as distinguished examples of American Impressionism and the Boston School. TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS: In the gallery you will discover temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Each of these exhibitions is on display for 60-90 days at a time and include an opening night of appetizers, snacks, music, fun and a chance to meet the artist. For the next upcoming temporary exhibition please call the front desk at 233-7003. SPECAIL EVENTS: The facilities of the Albrecht-Kemper are available for rent by individuals, organization, agencies and groups for private or public events. To plan an event at the Museum, contact the Director of Special Events at 233-7003 ext. 305. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: Develop your own creativity and appreciation for art with a schedule of art-orientated activities, lectures, events, art classes and workshops for children and adults! With a museum membership you will receive discounts and advance notice on all educational activities. BRADLEY ART LIBRARY: The Museum's reference library contains 2,500 volumes, a collection of periodicals and other materials relating to the permanent collection and the history of art. Readers and scholars may visit and utilize these references during regular museum hours. PLEASE CONSIDER MEMBERSHIP: Museum memberships are available at various levels and entitle members to benefits including free admission to the museum for a year, a subscription to ARTMATTERS (the Museum's quarterly newsletter), a chance to exhibit original artwork in the Annual Membership Show, discounts for art classes, 10% off in the Gift Shop, as well as invitations to exhibitions, previews, parties and special events. Artist, Larry DeGraff is creating a Master Painting from the painting that started it all…William Merritt Chase’s painting “A Venetian Balcony” was the first artwork acquired for what is today the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Miss Estelle Manon, A St. Joseph native and member of the St. Joseph Art League traveled to Venice, Italy in the summer of 1913 as one of several painting students of the famous artist, William Merritt Chase. While she was in Venice she watched Chase paint A Venetian Balcony, which captures a view of a shimmering canal glimpsed through the doors of Chase’s darkened Venetian apartment.
After Estelle Manon returned to St. Joseph, she and eleven other Art League members formally recognized their group in November 1913. Their goal was “to increase public knowledge and appreciation of the arts.” The members of the League began discussing their dream of a public gallery in St. Joseph where people could come and view important works of art.
Manon told League members about Chase’s “A Venetian Balcony” and they set about acquiring the painting for their future museum. Chase’s asking price was $1,500. He sent the painting to St. Joseph so that the Art League could display it as part of their fund-raising efforts. For an entire year the Art League held fund-raising events including teas, receptions, and even an opera. Ms. Manon relates how she even solicited funds on local streetcars. League members also hung the painting in the linen department of a downtown department store and asked visitors to contribute if they so desired. On November 18, 1915, William Merritt Chase accepted $1,000 as full payment for “A Venetian Balcony” because he was so impressed with the tenacity and determination of the Art League members in their fund-raising efforts. – From: The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art – A History and Guide to the Collection
Be sure to stop by tomorrow (July 10) as artist, Larry Degraff finishes his masterpiece.
