House of David baseball team 1920

This was a wonderful gift that we just received from a documentary filmmaker by the name of Bill Morrison, who I am so grateful to! This is the very earliest of any baseball footage that we are currently aware of!! This features of the famous whisker player Paul Mooney, who also received an amazing offer to play for the Chicago Cubs, but didn't want not want to leave the House of David to do so. Also if features Frank Wyland, who was a professional boxer turned baseball player!! Hope you enjoy it!!

Woodburn man, the last living House of David baseball player finally reaches Major Leagues

Such a fun story about a guy's father that had one wish some 65 years ago and it became real.....!!! Both Elizabeth Kay Holowasko and I had the pleasure of meeting Todd Aiken in the House Of David Museum when he visited last fall and hearing the story about his father and his playing days with the House Of David baseball team, and here's the story that appeared today in the news!!!

Ron Aiken, who pitched for the House of David in 1955, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at an Oakland A's game on Aug. 8.

Today we really had a great time showing the museum to one super fun group!!! This awesome group of people were from Naples Florida, Chicago and Las Vegas. The way they ALL had such a grasp of the entire story was awesome to me!! They were a seriously fun group to spend our morning with, and extremely inquisitive on every single aspect of the story of the House of David. The summer has been filled with guests that I so often wish would never leave!! It's what we look forward to after all of the long hours we put in here at the museum!! Thank you Elizabeth Kay Holowasko for helping make it a blast!!! Kimberly Kay Selent......please stop back soon!! 😊

Life is for sure full of great surprises and one I'm very thankful for tonight is a new friend that has agreed to help me run the museum whenever I have to keep my focus on real estate. I'm very happy to introduce my friend and museum tour guide Elizabeth Holowasko, (minister, writer & poet), who has an amazing heart, a wonderful disposition on life, loves history and our area and will be there to greet you and give a great tour on her days at the museum!! Please welcome Elizabeth and if you haven't already done so, make it a point to stop by and see for yourself why she's loving this new part of her life!!

Sioux City holds special place in black baseball history

Many of you knew about.....or at least heard about the WHITE House of David Baseball Teams that traveled the country and were considered some of the BEST in all of baseball, but did you know about the BLACK House of David Baseball Team?? I'm guessing NOT!! As the team traveled around the North American continent, they discovered some of their toughest opponents were in the Negro Leagues, mostly in the south and along the east coast. So they wanted to partner with these teams and travel America together, giving them the ability for some great doubleheaders and also allowing them to play in towns that had no team of their own! They eventually traveled down into Cuba (known for some of the greatest baseball talents in the world, even to this day). They found the Cuban teams were absolutely unbeatable!! And they also discovered that these black players from Cuba naturally grew whiskers, unlike most of their American counterparts. So they recruited dozens of these Cuban whiskered players that they felt were the "ringers" (the superstars of their Cuban teams) and offered them giant salaries, to come with the House of David and entertain America along the barnstorming circuits of baseball!!
For a few years around the country you could see posters nailed to trees and electric poles announcing "Come See The GREATEST Show in Baseball, the White House of David vs the Black House of David"!! What a fascinating time in American Baseball History!!! Here is a great story about that very team, and how they were some of the toughest, most talented athletes to ever step foot on a baseball field!!! I'll tell you more later, but enjoy this story below!

The Van Dyke Colored House of David was a Sioux City-based, African-American barnstorming team.

Enjoy an old story that first appeared in the Chicago paper called "The Classic" in the fall of 2011......as the House of David Museum was getting reopened on the wrong side of Michigan!!

Chris Siriano wants to get the hell out of Michigan. Even on a gorgeous fall day in Addison (population 627), with the leaves turning and the sun bright, Siriano—middle-aged, sporting a gray goatee and ball cap—can’t stop dreaming about the beach. “I raised my daughter by myself and everybody knew t…

Whiskers were the look of our team, but a few times we had players that didn't have to shave to have the "Clean Look"!! Here are two shots of Jackie Mitchell, the first female pitcher to play in pro baseball, and who went on to play for our whiskered team!! She actually was the first player to ever strike out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the same game, and who not much is written about because the major leagues and the media tried to hide her story because it just wasn't the norm back then for a lady to be such a superstar baseball player and steal the headlines!!! We actually have an entire archive about her in photos, that we shared with a writer from Louisiana who has written the first major story of her life behind the scenes!! And also shown here are photos of the House of David portable lighting crews, who took their telescoping lighting trucks around America in 1930-31 to light up baseball fields for the very first time ever!! They even traveled into Canada to share their lights, shown here in one of the photos!!

Doing a little reminiscing about the greatest man to have ever worn those H of D letters on his uniform.....Lloyd Dalager!! He was an AMAZING man, who started playing on the House of David Travel Team back in 1927 and played all the way thru the 1940 season, as catcher, and also served as a steam engine engineer off season as well as ran the House of David Power Plant (where they generated their own electricity). Shown here are photos of when Lloyd helped make the very first documentary for television at the age of 94 as well as the day he threw out the first pitch for the Chicago Cubs on his 92nd birthday!! He was the very last living member of the team at that time, and lived to be nearly 99 years old when he threw in his hat. He is dearly missed. Lloyd joined the House of David back in 1918 traveling from Canada with his father, mother and sister, and lived to see every major change in the colony since its inception. His father Hans Dalager drove the touring cars and then the bus for the team. Lloyd was eventually the President of the H of D for many years and later just relaxed in his room cheering on the Cubs and Tigers, traveling the midwest with me to give talks about his playing days and helping me give tours of the Shiloh Mansion (his home) almost until his passing. He clearly remembered Babe Ruth playing in Benton Harbor, as well as playing against Satchel Paige, and also traveling with Grover Cleveland Alexander. He remembered a time when the H of D had to pay G.C.'s wife as much as they were paying him to travel with the team and keep him sober thru the 4th inning!! He said that the toughest team he ever played was always the New York Black Yankees, who he said the House of David could never beat!! Great memories....
