High in the rugged mountains of Himachal Pradesh, a quiet miracle is unfolding snow leopards are making a powerful comeback.
Once feared to vanish from the wild, their population has risen by an incredible 62% in just four years, giving new life to India’s frozen frontiers.
At the heart of this revival is Khenrab Phuntsog, a local hero who has rescued 47 of these elusive cats over two decades. Armed with nothing more than a net, a blanket, and endless patience, he’s bridged the gap between humans and wildlife, proving that protection starts with empathy.
Today, Hemis National Park shelters around 60 snow leopards a living symbol of hope and coexistence. It’s a reminder that even in the coldest landscapes, compassion can spark life, and determination can bring an entire species back from the brink.
Bottom Fact: India’s snow leopard population now exceeds 500, with Himachal leading the way in successful conservation efforts.
