For Joelle Jackobsen, MD, making a difference can start with something as simple as saying yes.

Dr. Jackobsen has volunteered with SPIRIT for nearly two decades, providing surgical care to patients who otherwise may not have access to it. For her, the reward is seeing patients return to their lives feeling better, thriving and, as she puts it, “whole again.”

Through SPIRIT, specialty physicians provide donated care to uninsured patients in our community who otherwise wouldn't have access to the specialty services they need.

Whether you volunteer in your practice or at a partner hospital or surgery center, SPIRIT makes it easy by coordinating referrals and scheduling while also providing case management. You can focus on what you do best: caring for patients.

Thank you Sutter Health for letting us bring some of our Future of Medicine students by to participate in the simulation labs!

These students were able to get hands on experience and learn how to deliver a baby just as they would in Labor and Delivery, and how to respond to a code in the Emergency Department, including running an IV and an intraosseus infusion.

NEW SERIES: Where Are They Now?

One of the greatest parts of Future of Medicine isn't just watching students discover healthcare; it's seeing where their journeys take them.

We're excited to reconnect with Future of Medicine alumni and celebrate the incredible paths they're forging after the program.

First up is Madaline Her, a member of the Future of Medicine Class of 2022. Since completing the program, she's continued pursuing her goals in healthcare, and we're thrilled to share her story with you.

At Bridging Medicine, our investment in students doesn't end when the program does. We remain proud of every Future of Medicine graduate and can't wait to watch this next generation of healthcare leaders grow and make a difference in their communities.

Every bridge is supported by strong pillars. This new series celebrates the physicians whose service, compassion and leadership help connect medicine and our community.

Our first Pillar is David P***a, MD!

After more than 25 years in gastroenterology, Dr. P***a says one lesson stands above all the technology and medical advances he's witnessed: medicine is an art.

Whether helping a patient through frightening news, earning the trust of someone whose symptoms stem from past trauma, or simply taking the time to truly listen, he believes the way we care for people matters just as much as the science behind the diagnosis.

As a volunteer physician with SPIRIT, Dr. P***a quietly gives back to patients who might otherwise have nowhere to turn for specialty care. To him, they aren't "volunteer patients"—they're simply people who deserve excellent care.

Thank you, Dr. P***a, for reminding us that compassion isn't an extra part of medicine—it's at the heart of it.
