In the lead-up to ‘Five Lives in One’, we spent some time talking with Permanent Mark [ Mark Walters ] about the work he’s preparing for the exhibition, the different mediums that have shaped his practice, and the experiences that continue to find their way into what he’s making today.

(cont. ➡️)

Mark was born in Libya to a father from London and a mother from South Africa, and spent much of his childhood in Algeria. Long before he ever picked up a tufting gun, rugs were already part of his visual world. He remembers visiting markets as a kid and being surrounded by them—patterns, colors, textures, and craftsmanship that he says became ingrained in his DNA. The road back to rugs wasn’t direct.

(cont. ➡️)

About eight years ago, Mark was living in Spain when he lost a bar he owned and found himself broke and at one of the lowest points of his life. He came across a silkscreen table and started making prints. The work sold. He made his rent. More importantly, it confirmed that tattooing, the profession he had practiced for three decades, wasn’t the only way forward. From there, one thing kept leading to another.

(cont. ➡️)

Printmaking moved into collage. Collage moved into sculpture. Cyanotype followed, including large-scale works inspired in part by David Hockney’s photographic practice, which Mark began painting over and pushing further. The mediums changed because Mark changed with them. Staying in one lane has never suited him.

(cont. ➡️)

Tufting arrived almost by accident. After returning from Spain following his mother’s burial, Mark met a woman at a bar who told him she made rugs. The conversation was enough. He bought yarn, got a tufting machine, and started figuring it out.

(cont. ➡️)

What began as another medium to explore eventually became a substantial part of his practice. Even then, making rugs wasn’t enough. Mark began asking what else tufting could become. That led him to furniture, incorporating his textile work into wooden chairs and benches and bringing multiple forms of making into a single object.

At the center of Enchi Wang’s Presence is “1.7.1.7.”, a large-scale immersive installation built entirely inside Timeless Thrills in the weeks leading up to the exhibition.

The installation was always intended to be interacted with rather than simply viewed from a distance. It changes the way you experience the paintings around it—blocking certain sightlines while opening others and asking you to move, look through, look around, and sometimes find just the right position for a work to reveal itself.

That interaction was on full display during the opening reception. Visitors moved through and around the structure, looked through openings, shifted their perspective, and found their own ways of experiencing both the installation and the paintings surrounding it.

Seeing people engage with the work so naturally was a testament to Esther’s original vision for Presence and what she set out to create within the space.

Accompanying the installation, Wang wrote:

three thousands pounds below the frost line
frame works for the mind

what is a space?
permanence, safety, something that holds.
the last shah, the end of the ottoman empire.
a new beginning 20 ft. from your past.

the path lies in making

every day is a season,
every season is decay
knock the glass, jump the fence
parasympathetic dreams for you and me

what makes you laugh makes me cry.
beyond the box, there are archways
hyperboloid pillars and helicoid staircases
that breath tributaries in the sand

‘Animal Dreams’ is inspired by Enchi Wang’s relationship with her current dog, Gon, and one of her past dogs. While the painting serves as a tribute to two important companions, it also explores the shared instincts that connect humans and animals. Blending personal experience with broader reflection, the work considers the ways our relationships with animals can reveal something about ourselves.
