Warren Wellnitz has gifted the History Center with a book of letters to his grandfather and then father from a cousin in Germany. These letters were translated from the German by Arlene Wellnitz. The ORIGINAL letters that appear in this book along with her translation are archived at the History Center. Come in and look at this beautiful book and then check YOUR family history.

Volunteers at the History Center have been sorting through old newspapers and clipping articles to file in our family files. These articles are from 1970. Stop in and help. It is so much fun to look at all the articles like the Hospital News and the ads.

Established in 1888 Antioch had a population of about 175 until World War I. It was then that the potash supply from Germany was cut off and research proved that the alkaline lakes near Antioch could produce potash. By 1918 the population was 2000. When the war ended and cheap potash from France and Germany were available again the potash plants went bankrupt and the workers left. The population now is fewer than 25 residents. Thank you to Bruce Walgren for discovering these papers.

It's remarkable that one of the first things our towns in Sheridan County had was a newspaper. These are first and early editions from Lakeside.
