On Sunday, July 5, the Fillmore County Historical Society is hosting a special celebration in honor of America's 250th birthday on at the museum in Fountain from 2 to 5 p.m. Beginning with a special presentation, festivities include scavenger hunts, family fun games, treasure hunts in a sawdust pile, a teaser to our Prairie School event planned in August, and more.

Here’s a picture of the Fire Escape Rope that was bolted to the wall at the old Northwestern Hotel in Rushford.

Instructions: Open window, throw out rope, climb down rope holding on to knots. And… hold on for dear life! 😉

The Northwestern Hotel was built and opened in Rushford in 1868. It was taken down in 1974.

Farmers Market Grocery Store and Quality Meats in Rushford, circa 1970. This grocery store was located at 110 W Jessie St. and was originally built in 1964 by Tuggle and Beat(Beatrice) Rislove. They retired and sold the building in 1978 to Earl Bunke. It was known as Earl’s Sales and Service after that and Earl’s sold and serviced all sorts of small engine machines and products including ATV’s, lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc… . You name it, they had it. It was a successful and popular business in Rushford. Sometime around 2000 the business was sold. After that it was a Radio Shack for a short time.

These days the building is a popular thrift store that we all know and love as Grace Place.
