Phenomenal program by Ben Franklin at the museum’s pavilion last night! Ben entertained and captivated those in attendance with more than 45 minutes of dramatic narrative of his life from serving as a candle-maker as a boy in Boston to his work on both the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. Especially exciting was Ben’s account of his famous kite experiment proving that lightning is electricity. Ben continued to answer questions, in character, and posed for pictures with those in attendance. The program was Sponsored by Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, Royersford.
On display was an actual land patent (deed) signed by Franklin in June 1787 when he was simultaneously serving as governor (then, President of the Supreme Executive Council) in the Pennsylvania State House, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Independence Hall. The deed was for land owned by Martin Lintz who served in the Continental Army and crossed the Delaware with Washington in December, 1776. Also on display was a 1772 copy of Poor Richard’s Almanac. Children and many adults in attendance took advantage of a 12-page activity packet produced by the historical society for the program.
Announced were the winners of the “Guess the Number of Wooden Nickels” contest. Winners closest to the actual number received Handel’s gift card provided by the historical society.
