Iva Bittová‘s (https://www.bittova.com) music is a blend of rock and East European music which she describes as “my own personal folk music”. Her violin playing mixes different techniques, including playing the strings with various objects and plucking them like a banjo. Her vocal utterances range from traditional singing to chirping, cackling and deep throat noises. She puts her whole body into her performances, drawing on her theatrical skills.

Carrie Bradley-Neves (https://soundcloud.com/carrie-bradley-neves) has been making records, performing, and touring as a singer-songwriter and violinist for more than twenty-five years. Groups she has been part of include Ed’s Redeeming Qualities, 100 Watt Smile, and The Breeders. Her current project is called The Great Auk.

Satan’s Black Acid is a duo featuring writer/musician Cole Heinowitz and painter/musician Will Staples. Their SoundCloud page (https://soundcloud.com/satansblackacid) describes their work as, “Hellish dark sounds from deep in the mountains”.

Most Serene Congress (Chris Funkhouser, David Hirmes, Leonard Nevarez) is an electronic poetry / post-punk improvisation / digital recording project (https://soundcloud.com/mostserenecongress).

George Quasha (http://www.quasha.com/) and Chuck Stein (http://writing.upenn.edu/pennsound/x/Stein-C.php) have been collaborating as poets and performers since the 1970s.

Lights on at the Brooklyn Bridge Gate! From stalwart member and constant supporter John Hogan - this wonderful photo and remarks about the gate renovation:

"For the first time in 30 years, the Brooklyn Bridge lights at the AJ Snyder estate are lit. This is in honor of all the families who worked, lived and died in the Rosendale cement industry for over a hundred years and a reminder for everyone driving by on rt 213 of the accomplishments this state and country is cabable of. Thank you Althea Werner."

07/27/2018

Each year on July 30th, we celebrate the birthday of Dietrich Werner, Founder and President of The Century House Historical Society. Dietrich died suddenly on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 but during his lifetime, with the vision and guts that made him beloved by at least fifty per cent of everyone he met, Dietrich stewarded this property into a public trust and made the Widow Jane Mine both a home for the arts, and a place protected in perpetuity for all of us to enjoy. Dietrich was born in 1942 in Germany and, as a child, immigrated with his family to the United States, growing up in Greenville, New York. In a story that he told at least 4 times a year, Dietrich fought with other grade school kids because he was the only one to vote for Adlai Stevenson in a straw poll conducted during class. Dietrich served in the U.S. Navy, then earned his Associate's degree from Ulster County Community College in 1968, and a Bachelor's degree in History from SUNY New Paltz in 1971. A noted historian and community activist, Dietrich made his living as a plumber and electrician for many years. In the 1970s, Dietrich kept his motorcycle in his home where he rolled it through the door to keep safe at night. Dietrich also worked with sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp, designing plumbing systems for water sculptures. From 1980-1995, he was the owner of Huguenot Plumbing & Electric of Rosendale, after which he retired to devote himself full-time to the preservation of the Snyder Estate and the Widow Jane Mine and the development of The Century House Historical Society.
