I know you can’t visit the Widow Jane mine for a while, and I wanted to bring it to you. So that we all can remember what it is to love this place. Each of us has our own resonance with the Widow Jane. Some with concerts, some with poets, some with artists and musicians who have brought their gifts here. Each of us has our own history with the mine. Each of us is the survivor of a story no one else can ever know.

And that was the vision of our founder, Dietrich Werner. And in the Widow Jane, his vision endures. His vision was history and artists and musicians and poets and the community that belongs now to us all.

But his vision was also the miners, men who chopped out the pillars of the Widow Jane from bare rock and produced the cement that raised the buildings of Manhattan into the sky. In the early 1900s - at the dawn of the industrial age. The Rosendale Cement from their hard work and honest labor built the Brooklyn Bridge Piers and the statue of Liberty base.

These miners were men of grim brawn. With hand tools and dynamite and brute force labor, they chopped limestone from the earth. No benefits, no hospitals and only primitive doctors. When they were harmed by dynamite, harmed by falling rock, not only did they die, it hurt the whole time they were doing it.
We may think now that we are in hardship. We may think that we suffer. We may fear our job may be lost. We may fear to be displaced. We may fear the unknown.

Take courage and remember the men of grim brawn. No matter what we stand to lose, no matter what we may fear, We don’t toil 18 hours chopping and blasting rock in real hardship and in constant danger. We can be in the present and love the present we have. Because no matter what we fear, no matter what we stand to lose, when we all come out the other side of this – we lose our things only. No matter how bad that may feel, we are not sent down to the mine.

Don’t fear the unknown. There will be time enough to cry out when we are hurt.

This summer in the Widow Jane in the community each of us has shared and created, we will realize that while we were in fear - in this hardship and in this danger, we were standing at an opening door to something new and good. And we will remember Dietrich Werner and the men of grim brawn.

Mamalama y Andes Manta, two world (and other-world) music groups join forces in a collaborative, continuous flow of music in the amazing Widow Jane Mine.
Seamlessly weaving together the ancient with the modern in a collaboration between sacred and world music, from the rhythms and hauntingly beautiful melodies of the South American Andes and the rainforest, Native American chants and modern lullabies for melting glaciers and ocean deities, to the spiritual visions and sung prayers articulated in cathedrals, ‘Mamalama Y Andes Manta’ is an uncommon, otherworldly and uplifting experience through music.

On this day in 1942, our founder Dietrich Werner was born. He would have been 77 today. Dietrich loved his children, lively debate, justice, history, and Rosendale – in that order. With vision and guts that are still a power of example to us, he stewarded this property into a public trust for all to enjoy. Earlier today my friend and I were in the mine when a group of people came in after us. We were taking some photos and video when a man in the group began singing. We don't know who you are, but this was magical for us, especially with the thunder in the background. We want to thank you!
