Have you ever passed an Amish family in Lancaster County and wondered, “What language are they speaking?” 🤔

The answer might surprise you! Many Lancaster County Amish actually use three languages in different parts of their lives: Pennsylvania Dutch, English, and High German.

Pennsylvania Dutch—also called Pennsylvania German—is the language you’re most likely to hear Amish families speaking with one another. English is commonly used in school, business, and conversations with non-Amish neighbors. And during Sunday church services, High German has traditionally been used.

And despite the name, Pennsylvania “Dutch” isn’t Dutch at all! Its roots go back to German-speaking immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania generations ago.

It’s just one of the many fascinating traditions that make Amish culture so interesting to learn about. 🌾

🌾 Today is National Farmers’ Day—a day to say a heartfelt thank you to the people who help feed and clothe us every single day.

Here in Lancaster County, farming is all around us. We see Amish families working their fields with horses and traditional equipment, but today isn’t just about Amish farmers. It’s about everyone who makes a living in agriculture—from the smallest family farm to the largest operation.

Farming means early mornings, long days, changing weather, and plenty of hard work. Yet season after season, farmers keep planting, growing, harvesting, and caring for the land and animals that provide so much for all of us.

So today, we simply say: "Thank you, farmers!" We appreciate all you do. ❤️🚜🌽

🍂 There’s something extra special about Lancaster County in the fall.

Fields are being harvested, farm stands are filled with the season’s bounty, and before long, the countryside will be showing off its beautiful reds, oranges, and golds. It’s one of our favorite times of year to get off the main roads and explore Amish Country.

Our 90-minute Backroads Bus Tour takes you along peaceful country roads, past working Amish farms, horse-drawn buggies, and some of the prettiest farmland Lancaster County has to offer. Along the way, your guide will share stories about Amish life, customs, and traditions—and we’ll make at least one stop at an Amish home or Amish-run business (except Sundays). 🍁🌾

Have you ever noticed that Amish men may have long beards…but no mustaches?

There’s a reason for that! In the Amish tradition, married men grow beards as a sign of adulthood, marriage, and commitment to their faith and community. But the mustache is left off.

Historically, mustaches were associated with military service and European soldiers. Because the Amish have a strong tradition of nonviolence and do not serve in the military, the clean upper lip became part of their Plain way of life.

It’s one of those little details you might notice while traveling the backroads of Lancaster County—and there’s always a story behind it.

“Decided to take a back road trip in PA and came upon the bus tour with The Amish Village. The staff were very pleasant and got all 7 of us on the last tour bus. Our Guide Wayne was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the life of the Amish families there. I was very impressed and my grand kids ages 8 and 6 surprisingly listened intently and asked questions. I also learned several things that I was not aware of. If given the chance I would repeat this tour and I would also recommend to my friends and other family to take it as well.”

🌾Harvest Season Has Arrived in Amish Country!

There’s something special about Lancaster County in the fall. The air gets a little cooler, the fields begin to turn golden, and our country roads are surrounded by signs that another harvest season is underway.

For Amish farming families, this is one of the busiest times of the year. Field corn is being harvested to feed livestock through the colder months, pumpkins are ready for picking, local orchards are full of apples, and you may even see families working together to harvest to***co. Meanwhile, kitchens are busy preserving the last of the summer garden for winter.

And then there are those roadside stands! 🍎🎃 Keep an eye out for fresh produce, pumpkins, apples and plenty of homemade fall goodies as you travel the backroads.

It’s a beautiful time to experience Amish Country—and our Backroads Bus Tour is a wonderful way to see the changing farmland and learn more about Amish life along the way.

Looking for a Field Trip That Gets Kids Out of the Classroom?

Sometimes the best lessons happen when you can see, hear and experience something for yourself! That’s what makes a school trip to The Amish Village such a fun way to introduce students to Amish life right here in Lancaster County.

Students can tour our authentic Amish Farmhouse, step inside a one-room schoolhouse, visit the blacksmith shop, learn how a windmill and water wheel are used—and, of course, say hello to the animals in our barn. 🐴🐐❤️

Along the way, our friendly guides share stories about Amish history, traditions and everyday life, with plenty of opportunities for curious kids to ask questions. We can even work with teachers to tailor the experience to what their class is learning.

Our school tours are especially well suited for kindergarten through 6th grade, although we can adapt the experience for older students, too. Groups of 20 or more receive special school pricing, and reservations should be made at least two weeks ahead.
