🌽 What’s happening in the fields right now?

September is a busy—and beautiful—time here in Lancaster County! Drive along our country roads, and you’ll see fields and farm stands filled with the signs of a changing season.

Cornfields are beginning to turn from green to golden, pumpkins and squash are making their fall appearance, and local stands are still offering plenty of late-summer favorites like tomatoes, peppers, and sweet corn. 🍅🌶️🌽

For our Amish farming neighbors, this time of year means long days as summer crops wind down and the fall harvest gets underway. It’s one of those special times when you can really see Lancaster County’s farming traditions in action.

Have you ever wondered what an Amish church service is really like? It's much more than Sunday worship—it's a beautiful tradition that's been passed down through generations and brings families and neighbors together in a meaningful way.

Instead of gathering in a church building, Amish families take turns hosting services in their homes. Worship lasts about three hours, with centuries-old hymns, scripture readings, and messages shared in Pennsylvania Dutch and High German. On the Sundays when there isn't a service, many families spend the day visiting relatives, friends, or attending worship in a neighboring Amish district.

Did you know that today is National Bacon Lovers Day? If you're looking for a simple, comforting side dish that's been enjoyed around Lancaster County for generations, you're going to love Amish Green Beans with Bacon!

Ingredients:
• 2 Pounds fresh green beans, trimmed 6 Slices bacon, diced
• 1 Large onion, chopped
• 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
• 2 Tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 Teaspoon salt
• 1/4 Teaspoon black pepper

Directions:
• In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add green beans and cook until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Drain and set aside.
• In the same pot, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. In the bacon drippings, sauté onion until translucent.
• Add vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir until sugar dissolves.
• Return green beans to the pot and toss to coat with the dressing.
• Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
• Sprinkle with reserved bacon before serving.

Have you ever wondered what an Amish school day is like? 📚🍎 Step inside a traditional one-room schoolhouse and discover a simpler way of learning that has been part of Amish life for generations.

Most Amish children walk or ride scooters to school, where the day begins with a Bible reading, the Lord's Prayer, and hymns before lessons begin. With about 30 students in one classroom, these schools reflect the Amish values of faith, community, and a practical education.

Step inside our Blacksmith Shop and take a closer look at the tools that helped Amish farmers work the land for generations.

You'll find more than a dozen authentic pieces of farm equipment that were actually used on Amish farms, and each one is labeled so you can learn what it was used for. It's a fun stop for curious kids and adults alike—and a great way to better understand everyday life in the Amish community.
