MUSEUM IS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON The museum was started up by thousands of WWII Naval Veterans Organization members.

Inside tells the story of more than 411,000 sailors and 350,000 airmen who trained here from 1942 until 1956. They brought in real artifacts displaying how they ate, the sports they played, the guns they used, the uniforms they wore, and the places they slept. There's also a spot where naval recruits who broke the rules were sent.

“You could be in fractured for fighting, stealing. You have to remember too that when they were drafting people, you weren’t getting the cream of the crop either. You were probably getting the hoodlums in the first place and they were continuing it on when they got here.”

Although much has changed in the landscape since it was made a state park in 1963, the feeling of history is very much alive, making it one of Central New York’s best places to visit indoors and out. The other side of the museum, the Air Force portion, was created in 1997 by Sampson Air Force Veterans. The park has set historical markers along the trails this summer to show visitors what it looked like back when it was used as a station and base.

It's hard to believe we're here, but it's the final two days of the season! We're open today (10/10) and tomorrow (10/11) from 10am-3pm before we shut down for the year! Come out and see us! We will NOT be open Columbus Day!

"Souvenir of Geneva, N.Y." backscratcher, plastic shaped to look like carved ivory. Geneva souvenirs were popular when Sampson was open (Navy training in WWII, Air Force training in Korean War), but perhaps after as well.

On this date in 1947, the U.S. Air Force became an independent service branch. Here, Air Force recruits were arriving at Sampson Air Force Base to begin basic training in the 1950s.

One of the 330,000+ Airmen ✈️ to train at Sampson Air Force base was George Carlin! Yes, the George Carlin who became most notable for the "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" 🤐. He was trained as a radar technician, not sure if this was at Sampson or not. Then he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana.
