Check out this spotlight on Mary G. Roebling!
March is Women’s History Month and we want to celebrate impactful women from Burlington County who have broken barriers and helped inspire future generations. Today we honor and celebrate Mary Roebling.
A true trailblazer, Mary Roebling shattered glass ceilings in the financial world when she became the first woman to head a major U.S. bank in 1937—decades before women were widely seen in leadership roles in finance. As president of the Trenton Trust Company, she paved the way for women in banking and beyond.
Born in in Collingswood, Roebling attended high school in Moorestown. Her second husband was Siegfried Roebling, the great-grandson of Roebling Steel founder, John Roebling, and she replaced him on the Trenton Trust Bank’s board after he died in 1936. She went on to become the bank’s president.
Roebling didn’t stop there. She was also a fierce advocate for women in business and the military, and she became the first female governor of the American Stock Exchange and the founder of the Women’s Bank of Denver.
Her legacy is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and breaking barriers.
