Sea Change is on view! The variable aspects of the sea, whether observed or imagined, have been an inspiration to artists throughout the ages. In Maine, it has been a primary motif since the middle of the 19th century, when Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, first ventured to Mt. Desert Island in 1849 and declared, “The whole coast along here is iron bound, threatening crags, and dark caverns in which the sea thunders.” Contemporary artists respond to the primal subject of the sea, its history and its changeability, in a variety of mediums and approaches. The exhibition, “Sea Change,” brings together selected works of twelve painters and photographers, each depicting aspects of the sea and its vital force.
Artists included: Will Barnet, Betsy Eby, Robert Hamilton, Cig Harvey, Jacob Bond Hessler, Wolf Kahn, Daniel Minter, Sarah McRae Morton, Elizabeth Osborne, Stephen Pace, Emilie Stark-Menneg, and Greta Van Campen.
