🌈 It's alive!!! (Well, not really – but it sure looks like it!)

Baking soda + vinegar + a splash of color = the most satisfying fizz you'll ever see. 🫧

Here's what's actually happening: Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid – and when they meet, they react! They produce carbon dioxide gas, which is the same gas you breathe out. That gas is what creates all those amazing bubbles and makes the mixture foam and overflow.

The food coloring doesn't change the science at all – it just makes it way more fun to watch 🎨

Come explore more reactions, experiments and hands-on fun at Discovery Place Kids, where every day is a science day! πŸ”¬

We're going microscopic to learn how germs spread, what they do to our bodies and – most importantly – how to stop them! Then kids will get to create their very own germ supervillain character.

It's gross. It's fascinating. It might just inspire your little hero to wash their hands without being asked πŸ˜‰

πŸ§ͺ Why did the liquid suddenly turn dark blue?!

That's the Iodine Clock Reaction – and it's one of our favorite science tricks at Discovery Place Kids!

Here's the science behind it: Two clear liquids are mixed together. At first, nothing seems to happen... but then – whoosh – the liquid suddenly snaps to a deep blue-black color all at once!

Why? The two liquids are in a race. One liquid is busy breaking down a special ingredient. The moment it runs out, iodine swoops in and turns everything dark – like a chemical alarm clock going off! ⏰

The coolest part is that scientists can actually predict exactly when the color will change by adjusting things like temperature or concentration.

Come see experiments like this at our NEW daily science shows! πŸ”¬

Try-It-At-Home Tuesday! 🏠

We love helping the curiosity continue even when you're not here with us at the Museum. Today, try this: grab a magnifying glass (or just your eyes!) and go on a backyard bug hunt. πŸ›πŸπŸž

How many different bugs can you find? Draw them, name them, make up silly names for them – whatever feels fun.

And when you're ready for even MORE hands-on discovery... you know where to find us. 😊 Both our Huntersville and Rockingham locations are open and ready for your little explorer!

🌟 Our family is growing – and we couldn't be more excited!

Discovery Place Kids is coming to Matthews! πŸŽ‰ That means even more little learners across the region will soon have a place to explore, create and discover through the hands-on, STEAM-powered fun you already know and love.

The future Discovery Place Kids–Matthews will be designed for children from birth to age 10, featuring interactive exhibits and programming built around the curiosity and wonder that drives everything we do.

And the best part? The Matthews community is helping shape it from the ground up. πŸ’œ Right now, local families are being invited to share what they want to see in their new museum – because great learning experiences start with listening.

If you know families in the Matthews area, send this their way! Community listening sessions are happening:

πŸ“… Wednesday, May 13 | 6–8 p.m.
