This weeks book and art piece of the week is the pastel āHillside Farmā and the book Painting the Landscape in Pastel by Albert Handel and Anita Louise West.
Hillside Farm was done by artist Grace Mortimer Sherwood, 1918-1988, of Garden City, Long Island, NY.
There is very little information about her available, but we do know that she was part of the Nassau Art League, also called the Art League of Nassau County (still in existence!) and that she had her work in several exhibitions at the Garden City Hotel.
She was also daughter of Grace Buchanan Sherwood, a poet elected to the Poetry Society of America and author of 2 books of verse.
Our records, from Elmer Halseth, indicate that āHillside Farmā was in an exhibition at the aforementioned Garden City Hotel, and we were able to track down a newspaper article from the exact show from which the peice was purchased in 1942, thanks to the excellent online records of the Nassau Daily Review Star.
This is one of the peices donated to the school district through the philanthropy of NY Socialite Mrs. W.L. Wright of Long Island, who learned of the CFAC through a woman named Pegeen Sullivan. Who she is..we donāt know! That is research for another day.
If youād like to see Mrs. Sherwoods art, or check out the book, stop in and see us!
