Join Museum of York County and Savannah Jordan, Associate Wildlife Biologist and Habitat Education Manager at the South Carolina Wildlife Federation to learn how to create a functioning ecosystem in your yard, garden, or greenspace in this interactive Certified Wildlife Habitat Garden Workshop on Sep. 12 from 10 a.m. - noon.

🐝This hands-on workshop will include a presentation on how to create a thriving habitat for a variety of wildlife.
🌱Learn how your yard can be certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
🦋You will also get to create your own nature craft and join a tour of the Museum’s very own Certified Wildlife Habitat and brand new pollinator garden.

🐟Fish Scutes

Fossils that are not visible or barely visible to the naked eye are called microfossils. While many of them do indeed require a microscope to observe, some are just regarded as very small.

Various groups of animals have bony deposits within their skin. Sharks have “denticles.” Alligators have “osteoderms,” and some bony fish have “scutes.” Like other bones, fish scutes can fossilize and remain preserved for millions of years. Fossils from a site in New Jersey are significant because they were deposited around the time of the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs and up to 70% of all life on Earth. This fossil discovery granted paleontologists the rare opportunity to observe fish on both sides of the extinction event, revealing the species that perished and those that survived.

York Technical College Biology students recently explored the museum as part of an experiential learning project. Their next step? Creating hands-on, interactive activities that will bring biology to life for museum visitors!
