tment is an arts carnival that will be held on July 14 in Downtown Riverside’s Historic White Park.

“A lot of people might ask what an arts carnival is, exactly,” says Cosme Cordova, local artist and owner of Division 9 Gallery. “Imagine the carnival landscape with lights, games, colorful tents, performers, costumes and music. But there is a bit of a twist.”

In lieu of random toys, stuffed animals and goldfish, all prizes won at the carnival will be original artwork from local artists. Division 9 Gallery is hosting art workshops every Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Free and open to local artists, these workshops allow artisans to learn a new style of art, such as dry point etching, jewelry making and creative magnets to help create work that will be given away at the event. Local vendors such as jewelry artist Toni Tracy and doll maker Maggie Tello Case will be featuring high quality, handmade goods. Alongside them will be Riverside artists displaying and selling their work. Food from Zacateccas Restaurant will be available for purchase while arts and crafts workshops will be offered. The list of live bands is growing and currently features The Salty Raisins, Glass Bottle Grenade and headliners Big Papa and the TCB, who recently appeared at Historic Fox Theatre. In addition to an amazing line-up of local bands, performers and art, the aesthetic look of ARTNIVAL is another unique feature of the event. The ARTNIVAL spirit is derived from the turn of the century carnival. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Edwardian attire.
“Think steam punk meets the Dickens Festival,” says Cordova. He suggests that guests can feel as though they have stepped back in time by wearing their sharpest top or bowler hat, suspenders, handlebar moustache, striped jacket, feathers, acrobat leotard, tutu or corset.

“This will be an event for the entire community that allows people a way of going back to their childhood,” Cordova explains. “It’s a chance to enjoy a peaceful night with the whole family. One of the goals is to introduce the community to local artists as they experience art outside of a traditional museum setting.”

ARTNIVAL will take place on Saturday, July 14 from 4:00 p.m. The entrance to the park is located at the corner of Market Street and 9th Street in Downtown Riverside. Admission to the park will be $5, and tickets for games are available for fifty cents within the park. . Presale tickets may be purchased on the ARTNIVAL Kickstarter – you may find the link on Division 9 Gallery’s Facebook. All proceeds will go to the Division 9 Gallery non-profit fund, which seeks to educate the community in arts and traditions and cultivate up and coming artists.
