Saturday was a rough start to the weekend with winds (up to) 29mph blowing across the flat Lancaster Counter fields; bringing with it a much colder day than Sunday. Our volunteers (and friends of the project who came out to see us) braved the weather; and had a great weekend (despite the weather). We enjoyed getting a chance to talk with Strasburg Rail Road staff, and visitors from ALL OVER (including MANY guests from Long Island)… as well as watching Strasburg’s Great Western #90 arriving to and departing the station, where our team was set up.

We continue to STRIVE DAILY to see our beloved Long Island Rail Road #39 BACK IN STEAM, and ran on the Strasburg Rail Road’s “ROAD TO PARADISE”! To see this feat of Pennsylvania Railroad engineering return to the rails, we ask that YOU would join us; by following this page (and supporting us financially)! In time we hope to offer EVERYONE the chance to see the ONLY Pennsylvania Railroad/ Long Island Rail Road steam locomotive in REGULARLY SCHEDULED SERVICE; a Strasburg OPERATED LIRR #39!

With our FIRST STRASBURG FUNDRAISING WEEKEND quickly approaching, we wanted to share a video shot on the Strasburg Model Railroad Club of New Jersey’s: HO Strasburg Rail Road layout (A BIG THANKS TO THEM).

The scene (in model form) shows LIRR #39 IN PARADISE, pulling round front of her consist of ICONIC wooden Strasburg coaches; in preparation for the return trip to the station in Strasburg! These scenes are what we are STRIVING to achieve, and the LIFE that LIRR #39 deserves! FOR FAR TOO LONG this commuter locomotive LEGEND, had sat idle waiting for her chance to shine once again… doing the VERY THING she was built to do; pull passengers on a REGULARLY SCHEDULED TIMETABLE!

To make this happen, WE NEED YOUR HELP in raising $1.5M by 2030 (of which we are approximately a third of the way currently) to give this locomotive another chance at life! We will be on site beside Lefever Hall, promoting the OPERATIONAL RESTORATION of Long Island Rail Road #39; WHICH IS UNDER CONTRACT TO RUN ON THE STRASBURG RAIL ROAD (upon raising a total of $1.5M). 🚂A CHORUS OF STEAM!💨

We PROMISE this is our last whistle post for the time being; but it would be an UNFORGIVABLE crime to not share this excellent video of LIRR #39’s Pennsylvania Railroad 3-Chime from inside the cab of the Williams Grove Railroad’s: Pennsylvania Railroad #643! With Josh Ozio at the throttle, the locomotive joined in on the chorus of whistles (from locomotives and traction engines alike, that could be heard across the grounds of the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association), which happened every day at noon during their BIG STEAM SHOW!

🚂Logging Steam, Pennsy Voice!💨

We wanted to share a video taken by our Steam Up LIRR #39 team member: Brielle Heilman, of the AWESOME Gypsy #8 logging steam locomotive running up the line (at the Williams Grove Railroad); using OUR VERY OWN LIRR #39’s Pennsylvania Railroad 3-Chime Whistle. We noticed that during our original post highlighting the significance of the Walkersville Southern Railroad’s NEW BUILD #8 “Gypsy”, we neglected to include a video of that locomotive sporting #39’s whistle; of which we are correcting HERE!

Though only operating at a solid 100-110 psi, the Gypsy logging locomotive put on a GREAT SHOW using the whistle, and for that they have our gratitude! We hope you enjoy this video, and be sure to not only support the Steam Up LIRR #39 project; but give the Walkersville Southern Railroad a visit (in Walkersville, Maryland) as well!

🎶The Power of MUSIC!🪕

We hope everyone is safe and dry in the midst of this Nor’easter; it’s been a busy week for the museum and our team, but we wanted to make sure to share some positivity here!

Earlier this year a video was made showing our Railroad Museum of Long Island volunteers HARD AT WORK, repainting Long Island Rail Road #39 in a fresh protective coat against the elements… so that she is ready for her FULL OPERATIONAL RESTORATION to begin following our raising of $1.5M!

This video was made entirely using clips of that THREE DAY work weekend, but we needed some music for the background. Anyone in filmmaking should know how hard it is to find free to use music, that matches their vision for the project… with many turning to artificial intelligence to produce it. Determined to produce this video ENTIRELY IN HOUSE and FREE OF AI; we turned to the natural musical talent of Joe Costa, and our “ancient mariner” himself Steven Sanflippo!

Armed with a banjo and a harmonica, the two of them sat down with our RMLI President: Don Fisher and recorded this song for use!
