Ken and Alice Atwood will present a free photo travelog of their recent trip to East
Greenland.
The expedition cruise included a visit to the village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the only permanent, inhabited town on the Scoresbysund and several stops to explore the fjords and geography of Northeast Greenland National
Park. Scoresbysund is the largest fjord system in the world and the national park is the furthest north of any national park. An additional reason this trip was to experience and photograph the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. The challenge of photographing this eclipse was that it was from a boat on the ocean.

Children’s Hour “Going Batty at the Maturango Museum”

Are bats blind? Are they birds or flying mice? Maybe you’ve wondered
about these creatures of the night too. If so, join us for a fun learning time
called, “Going Batty at the Maturango Museum”.
The docents of the Maturango Museum would like to invite you to our
monthly Children’s Hour on Friday, October 9, from 10:30 - 11:30 AM
called “Going Batty at the Maturango Museum”. This free program will be
full of stories and information about bats, as well as action songs, and a
fun child-friendly craft. We will be exploring exhibits and taxidermied
specimens at the Discovery Table. More information about our Children’s

BONES will be the topic of our next Free Saturday Sept 12
Join us from 11-2 when we will show many of the different animal bones and skeletons including the spine of a cougar. There will also be a fun bony craft.

Uncaged Art
Argus Room, Maturango Museum, through Sept. 29 2026

Paintings and drawings from teenaged detainees held at Tornillo Detention Center, Texas, in 2018 and 2019. Some 6000 youths, aged 13-17, from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and other Central/South American countries were housed at Tornillo by Department of Homeland Security.
Tornillo was the first facility constructed to contain youths separated from their families for families entering the U.S illegally.
A visiting teacher’s assignment to the youths was to create something they loved about their homeland.
The result was hundreds of creative sculptures, paintings, drawings, and dresses. When the center was closed in 2019, a local priest saved some of the artwork. In cooperation with University of Texas El Paso Oral History project, an exhibit was created to show some of this creativity in the face of adversity.
This show comes to us courtesy of Deacon Cathy Kline, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Ridgecrest.

Venus is a bright half-illuminated disk, but it disappears from view shortly after 9 PM. Saturn is barely rising in the East.

We will have several telescopes set up for public viewing.

The Quarter Moon is 10.4 days old and 77% illuminated, with lots of details visible in our telescopes. We can see craters, mountains, rilles, and other details on the surface of our nearest neighbor.

The Museum rocks on Free Saturdays!
Glenn Harris will be here from 11-2 with a large collection of rocks and minerals as well as interpretive panels showing the kinds of rocks and the geology of the Indian Wells Valley. He will help with identification of rocks.
The docents will provide the paints and rocks to paint for a craft activity.
