Purses come in all shapes and sizes. Some are large and some are small. Purses can be more decorative or be designed to be more functional. They can be made of many different materials and their use is unique to each owner. It was the same in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are some purses from the Fort Bend Museum collection.

1981.043.001 – Plaid drawstring purse owned by the Myrtle Feris family; Myrtle Feris grew up in Richmond and was the daughter of Yandell Feris and the granddaughter of Dr. George Feris (slide 5)
1983.025.002 – black crocheted cotton purse made and used by Emma Mulcahy of Rosenberg (slide 3)
1982.050.005 – lavender beaded purse brought from France to Carrie McMickin Johnson later wife of Dr. John Harolde Turner. She received the purse from her brother Dr. Levy S. Johnson after he returned from service in World War I. (slide 4)
1982.050.006 – handmade black beaded and crocheted purse with drawstring top; made by Carrie McMickin Johnson Turner (slide 7)
1972.092.004 – black beaded purse in a star shape with crisscrossing strap handles and black silk lining (slide 6)

Still reminiscing about what a wonderful day we had at our Career Fair! 💙

We were thrilled to see such a great turnout and so many people come together to learn, connect, ask questions, and explore new possibilities.

Events like this truly take a community, and we couldn’t have done it without ours. A heartfelt thank you to every organization and professional who hosted a booth, every volunteer who gave their time, everyone who helped behind the scenes, and, of course, every person and family who came out and joined us.

You each played a part in making the day such a success, and we are incredibly grateful!

We loved seeing our museum filled with conversation, curiosity, and connection—and after a turnout like this, we’re already looking forward to the opportunity to do it again. ✨

This beautiful quilt, found in the Moore Home, is a reminder that history isn't only found in documents and photographs. It's also preserved in the handmade pieces that families created, used, and treasured for generations.

Carry A. Nation is best known for being a fiery and controversial advocate of the temperance movement. She made national headlines by destroying barrooms with her hatchet, ultimately being arrested and released over thirty times. But before joining the movement, Carry and her husband David lived here in Richmond, where they operated the National Hotel on the corner of Morton and 4th street. The family was very successful in the hotel business, and Carry even became an active participant in local churches.
The couple had to leave Richmond in 1889, when David became the target of animosity after denouncing the Jaybirds in an article for the Houston Post. Carry would go on to write about her time in Richmond in her autobiography, where she stated that the town was a very pleasant place to live before the conflict arose.
