REACH Museum Welcome to the REACH Museum, an institution dedicated to education for all ages.

The REACH is a project of the Richland Public Facilities District. The facility features exhibitions and programs that celebrate the region's history and culture. The Hanford Reach Interpretive Center is the preeminent showcase for advancing our understanding of the forces of man and nature that have shaped the Pacific Northwest, from the Ice Age Floods to the Manhattan Project and beyond.

TOMORROW: Things get a little wild at the REACH!

Meet a lamprey with Yakama Nation Fisheries, handle a millipede with the Bug Guru, say hello to the Go Team Therapy Dogs, and meet a Karelian Bear Dog from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW)! Learn how these remarkable dogs help reduce conflicts between people and wildlife.

It’s all part of the 12th Annual Screech at the REACH—a night of creatures, curiosity, and family-friendly fun!

Join us TOMORROW for Little Explorers: Hooray for Bats! Bring your preschooler for a morning of discovery as we explore these fascinating nighttime neighbors together.

Did you know? Pallid bats found in the Hanford Reach area use their big ears to listen for tiny creatures moving on the ground. Sometimes dinner comes with a rustle!

RAVEN OR CROW? Get to know our region’s feathered neighbors!

The Hanford Reach is home to more than spectacular scenery. Ravens are among the birds you may spot while exploring White Bluffs, and both Common Ravens and American Crows have been documented in the broader Hanford area.

For today’s Screech Week creature feature, discover a few clues that help tell these birds apart!

LISTEN FIRST
An American Crow’s familiar call is a harsh “caw!” A Common Raven often makes a deeper, throaty croak. Both make other sounds, too!

LOOK CLOSELY
Common Ravens are larger, with heavier bills and shaggy throat feathers. American Crows have smaller bills and smoother-looking throats.

WATCH THE TAIL
In flight, a raven’s tail forms a wedge or diamond shape. A crow’s looks more squared or rounded.

TAKE THE DISCOVERY OUTSIDE
On your next walk along the Columbia River or visit to the Hanford Reach National Monument, pause and listen. What can you learn about a bird before you even see it? Use several clues together—size alone can be misleading from a distance.

That’s the spirit of Screech Week: turning curiosity about creatures into a closer connection with the natural world around us.

Wolves have packs—but do coyotes?

Yes! Coyotes can form family groups, too. They often travel and hunt alone or in pairs, so a coyote spotted solo isn’t necessarily a loner!

For today’s Screech Week creature feature, meet two canine cousins with some interesting differences:

FAMILY LIFE
Wolf packs usually include parents and their offspring. Coyotes also raise young in family groups, even when they head out separately to find food.

SIZE
Gray wolves are much larger than coyotes—but size can be difficult to judge during a quick sighting from a distance.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
Wolves often hunt larger animals, including deer and elk. Coyotes frequently hunt rodents and rabbits. Neither species sticks to just one menu!

CLOSE TO HOME
Coyotes are commonly seen on the Hanford Reach National Monument. They’re part of the wildlife story right here in our region!

Spooky Science takes over the REACH TOMORROW!

Bring your curiosity—and your young scientists—for a morning of hands-on discovery as we kick off Screech Week!

One experience you won’t want to miss: A Chemistry Mystery with Madame Curie! Step into her lab, put your scientific thinking to work, and earn your own honorary “Nobel Prize for Science” magnet to take home.

Fun Facts about Marie Curie:

►She investigated radioactivity, the energy released by certain unstable atoms, and coined the term.
►She discovered two elements with her husband, Pierre Curie: polonium and radium, in 1898. She named polonium after her homeland, Poland.
►She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, sharing the 1903 Physics prize with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel.
►She won a second Nobel Prize—in Chemistry—in 1911. She remains the only person awarded Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.
►She helped bring mobile X-ray units to wounded soldiers during World War I, allowing doctors to locate bullets and broken bones.
►Her daughter Irène became a Nobel Prize–winning scientist, too, sharing the 1935 Chemistry prize with her husband, Frédéric Joliot-Curie.

Madame Curie’s lab is open from 10–11 AM. Adult lab partner required!

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Indigenous peoples of the Columbia River region and their enduring connections to its lands and waters.

Did you know that Wanapum means “River People”? The Wanapum are among the Indigenous peoples whose homelands include this region. As the Wanapum Heritage Center shares, the Columbia River has been their home from time immemorial—a connection extending beyond written records or living memory.

That connection continues today. Through the Heritage Center’s Living Culture Program, knowledge of traditional food gathering, toolmaking, weaving, and beadwork is passed to younger generations. These practices carry knowledge about the land, its resources, and ways of life across generations.

Indigenous cultures are living cultures. Learning about our region means understanding both Native peoples’ histories and their continuing presence and contributions.

At the REACH Museum, we invite you to deepen your understanding of the place we call home by learning directly from Indigenous voices.
