A Week of Exploration Awaits at the REACH Museum

Looking for something to do this week? From sensory-friendly museum experiences to hands-on learning, history, art, and storytelling, there's something for explorers of all ages at the REACH Museum.

Tomorrow, June 19, the REACH Museum will be OPEN during regular hours.

In recognition of Juneteenth, we will be showing *Big Medicine: The Story of York* throughout the day. This 30-minute documentary explores the life and legacy of York, the only Black member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, whose contributions helped shape one of America's most significant journeys.

Screenings begin at 10:15 a.m. and continue every hour at :15 past the hour. The final showing begins at 3:15 p.m.

Admission to the film is free for REACH Members and included with General Admission.

As we commemorate Juneteenth and reflect on the many stories that have shaped our nation, we invite you to join us for this special viewing experience.

Join us as we launch the first B²: Boredom Busters Summer Edition program of the summer, part of our America’s 250th celebration exploring the people, places, wildlife, and traditions that help tell the story of our nation.

Discover the bald eagle—an iconic American species that can still be seen soaring above the Columbia River and throughout the Mid-Columbia region. Through hands-on activities, creative projects, and museum exploration, participants will learn about eagle biology, habitats, and conservation.

Washington changed the American flag.

When Washington became the 42nd state in 1889, a new star was added to the flag of the United States.

Long before that star was stitched into the flag, the Columbia River was already carrying stories through this region — stories of trade, exploration, migration, agriculture, science, and community.

Here in the Mid-Columbia, history is written into the landscape itself. From the riverbanks and shrub-steppe to the growth of the Tri-Cities, this region reflects many chapters of the American story.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the REACH Museum continues exploring how local history connects to the broader story of the nation.

On this day in 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the proclamation creating the Hanford Reach National Monument — protecting nearly 195,000 acres of rare shrub-steppe landscape, river shoreline, wildlife habitat, and cultural history along the Columbia River.

The Hanford Reach remains the last free-flowing, non-tidal stretch of the Columbia in the United States — a landscape where salmon still return, migratory birds gather, and stories stretching back more than 10,000 years continue to shape the region today.

From Indigenous history and Lewis & Clark exploration to the Manhattan Project and modern conservation efforts, this landscape reflects layers of the American story still visible across the Reach today.

At the REACH Museum, we’re reminded daily that this place is more than scenery — it’s a living connection between science, culture, history, and community.

June 4, 1805: The West Was Still Unknown

On this day in 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was making its way west through territory that was largely unmapped by the young United States.

Their journey wasn't simply about reaching the Pacific Ocean. It was one of the nation's first large-scale scientific expeditions—documenting plants, animals, landscapes, rivers, and cultures while helping expand understanding of the American West.

While Lewis and Clark never traveled through the Hanford Reach itself, their expedition helped ignite the exploration, mapping, and scientific curiosity that would eventually shape the Columbia Basin and the Pacific Northwest.

Today, more than 220 years later, the REACH Museum continues that spirit of discovery by connecting visitors to the natural history, science, and stories that make this region unique.

As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we're reminded that every landscape has a story—and every generation adds a new chapter.
