Remembering Minnie Minoso in a photograph by Ernest C. Withers. The photograph below is one of more than 1000 images by Ernest C. Withers available at Decaneas Archive.
Withers caption for this photograph reads as follows:
"Saturnino Orestes Armas Arfan, Martin's Stadium, 1952. Born in Havana, Cuba, Minoso lead the American League in stolen bases in 1951, 1952, 1953".
Withers documented the twilight years of Negro League Baseball, and this photograph, like many others he took, was taken during a game when barnstorming teams made up of major league black all-star players barnstormed the South to play against remaining Negro League Teams. Martin's Stadium was in Memphis, Tennessee.

Ernie Banks 1913 - 2015

Ernest Withers is most known for his photographic document of the Civil Rights Movement in the South. He also photographed the Memphis Beale Street Music scene and the twilight years of the Negro Baseball Leagues.

The image shown here is one of Withers' iconic images from his Negro Leagues portfolio. It shows Jackie Robinson, the first African American Hall of Fame member from the National League, with Larry Doby, the first African American Hall of Fame member from the American League. Sitting on the dugout steps in the background is Ernie Banks. This picture was taken in 1953 when African American major leaguers assembled teams that would barnstorm the south to challenge remaining Negro League teams.
