Don't miss tomorrow's two-hour Nevada History - On The GO! program, Nevada’s Age-Old Question: Dayton vs Genoa at the Sierra View Library, June 6 2026, from 1 to 3pm.

We are honored to have historian, Jeff Kintop, Stan Paher, Linda Clements and Michael Fischer, who will be our moderator.

This is a special two-hour program that will look at the age-old question of whether Dayton or Genoa was the first settlement. Our distinguished panel will talk about the available historic documents, newspaper articles, and limited diary entries, the establishment of a mail station and route between Salt Lake City and Sacramento, and the cast of characters who worked and lived in the Carson Valley and Gold Canyon areas.

We have a distinguished historian panel that will tackle this question. Each member has spent years looking into this topic. Here’s your chance to find out if this ongoing discussion can be resolved. This will be an engaging Nevada history program that you don’t want to miss!

We want to thank our community partner, Sierra View Library for hosting this free series while the NHS is being renovated.

We are happy to announce that the NHS received a 2026 Historic Preservation Award last evening, May 14, 2026, at the California building, Idlewild Park.

The City of Reno Historical Preservation Awards is an annual event that celebrates excellence in local historic preservation, including adaptive reuse projects, legacy businesses, home renovations, and the people who make all this happen.

Staff members, Shery Hayes-Zorn, Kristina Hornback, and Debra Brastoff, represented the Society at the Awards event on Thursday, May 14, 2026. It was such an honor to be recognized for our “On The GO!” program series while the museum is closed due to renovations.

We would like to thank the HRC, the City of Reno, and the amazing local historians who work with us to provide engaging, free history programs throughout the community. We would not be able to accomplish our programs without the amazing community partners, Sierra View Library, Knights of Pythias, Washoe County Library System, and Nevada Sunset Winery.

We want to thank Tammy Buzick for tonight's program about her book, Bowers Mansion: The Legacy of a Comstock Family.

It was an engaging program as Tammy shared stories about her research and passion about the history Bower's Mansion.

We want to thank everyone that signed up for today's Knights of Pythias (KOP) Cemetery Talk & Tour today.

Bill Mardon is so knowledgeable and he shared interesting history and stories about the early Reno residents. The walking part of the tour was great...you can appreciate the work done to the upkeep of their cemetery.

It was wonderful to meet several people that have loved ones in this historic cemetery.
