Alice L. Smith (1902-1990) was an early civil rights advocate in Nevada. She moved to Reno in 1938 with her husband, Al. Together, they founded the Reno-Sparks chapter of the NAACP in 1946. Throughout her life, she served on many community boards and represented Nevada on both national and international delegations. She worked tirelessly to make a positive impact on her community. In 1989, a Reno elementary school was named after her - honoring her hard work on behalf of Nevada.

In 1899, Jeanne Wier came to the University of Nevada, Reno to teach history. She taught history and political science, while also providing key leadership in the department till her retirement in 1940. In 1904, she founded the Nevada Historical Society, which remains an important archive for Nevada history. Wier also played a key role in the Nevada suffrage movement and was a long-time advocate for women's rights.

Maya Miller (1915-2006) was a well-known Nevada activist and environmentalist. She lobbied throughout the state and in Washington, D.C. for environmental causes, welfare rights, and international human rights. In the mid-1970s, she spoke out at hearing against the storage of nuclear waste in Nevada. She played a key role in establishing the bi-state park at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe. Miller was a powerful advocate for Nevada’s environment and women across the world – her legacy continues today.

Sarann Knight-Preddy (1920-2014) moved to Hawthorne, NV in 1950 with her husband. That same year, she became the first woman of color to obtain a gaming license in NV. She ran the Tonga Club, which was Hawthorne's only gaming establishment for African-Americans. She was a civil rights activist, a former Vice President of the Las Vegas chapter of the NAACP, and the first president of the Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce.
