The date was June 15, 1933, when photographer Arthur Nelson was summoned by Brown’s Tractor and Implement company to take a picture of eight International half-ton pickups lined up in front of their shop. The trucks had been ordered by Fortier transportation company of Fresno. Fortier had a contract to lease these trucks (a total of ten) to the Civilian Conservation Corps based at Camp Sequoia. Brown’s store was located at 1230 G Street, now home to Kings River Tractor.

St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on dedication day, May 21, 1911. The parish in Reedley was established in 1906. Construction began on the church in 1907. Presiding over the dedication that day in May was the Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Conaty, Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles.

Chester J. Kelley, a former Reedley boy, joined the U. S. Army in 1917, five days after the declaration of war with Germany. Kelley was wounded while serving in France on October 25, 1918, and died, while hospitalized, on November 16, 1918, just five days after the signing of the armistice. He was 24 years of age. Kelley was interred in France. At the request of his family, his body was returned home. On March 1, 1921, Kelley was laid to rest at Reedley Cemetery with full military honors. Pictured here is the caisson that carried his remains down G Street on the way to the Methodist church. The march to the church, and later to the cemetery, included color guard, the Reedley Band, armed es**rt, clergy, American Legion members, and mourners. Kelley was one of 19 Reedley men who died in service to our country during World War I. Monday is Memorial Day.

Here is a view of G Street looking south from the 900 block, circa 1907. The Club Stable on the left was built in 1904 and was located on what is now the parking lot adjacent to the former Bank of America building. When the old stable was demolished in 1944, it was reported that the “Club Stables” sign was taken away by someone for a souvenir. So, who has this sign stashed away in their garage or barn?

One hundred years ago this week Dr. E. W. Hauck, principal of Reedley High School, proposed that the trustees establish a junior college. The trustees agreed to the idea at a meeting later in the month. This signaled the beginning of what would become Reedley College.

A wood block print of “The School Gate” at Reedley High School was tipped-in to the pages of each copy of the 1927 edition of the high school’s Porcupine yearbook. The artist was student Hulda Eitzen. The gate, dating from 1923, remains standing on North Avenue.

The Growers Supply Company was established in 1933 by N. H. Mortensen and Melchior Hansen. The business moved to this location at the northwest corner of G and 10th Streets in 1937. Mortensen bought Hansen’s interest in the business upon Hansen’s death in 1944. The business was acquired by Western Farm Service in 1966 and renamed Pioneer Equipment in 1983. Attention auto enthusiasts – help us estimate the date of this photo.
