Members of the Reedley Comets girls softball team were treated to a performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus in Fresno in September 1949. Included was a “back of the big top” visit with some of the circus performers. Host for the day was Brother John (standing far left) of the Christian Brothers Mount Tivy Winery – sponsor of the team. The Comets competed from 1948 through 1953 as part of the Central Valley Girls Softball League.

Reedley’s First Mennonite congregation was organized in 1906. The group built their church on the southeast corner of L and 12th Streets in 1908. This George Besaw photo post card likely dates from about 1911. The church building was reconstructed and enlarged in 1914 and enlarged again in the 1940s with additional improvements made in the years since.

Here is a fine view of downtown Reedley circa 1912. Looking north up G Street from 11th Street. This photo post card by George Besaw shows all modes of transportation – horse-drawn buggies and wagons, automobiles, bicycles, and a motorcycle. It was a few years later in 1919 when Reedley began to see some streets being paved.

Kings County Packing Company (headquarters in Armona) bought the former McAbee cannery on the southeast corner of I and 14th Streets in 1922. They started packing figs and peaches in Reedley the following year. The company only had a short season in 1931 at which time it appears they permanently closed the Reedley facility. This photo likely dates from 1923.

Reedley College starts its 101st year this Monday, August 10. This rare photo shows the students and faculty of the college in 1926 – the year it all started 100 years ago.

Workers at the California Peach Growers packinghouse are shown gathered for a group photo sometime during the 1920s. The packinghouse was located on the north side of 8th Street, between the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroad tracks.

Historical Reedley post cards now on sale. Ten different views. Descriptive captions on the reverse side. $2.50 each or five for $10.00. Available at the museum and the Chamber of Commerce office. The museum is open Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

The mural (upper photo) on the 9th Street side of the former Bank of America building is based on a painting created by Milton Young, a Fresno artist and long-time art department employee of the Fresno Bee. Young created the painting in 1946 at the request of Art Tabler, a member of Reedley’s Chamber of Commerce, who believed Reedley needed a trademark image (lower photo) and slogan, “The World’s Fruit Basket.” The Chamber, under the leadership of President Bozo Aalto, promoted the use of the image and slogan. For years the image and slogan were used on letterhead and promotional materials. Tabler, the local Santa Fe Railway agent, was also the general chairman of Reedley’s first Fiesta in 1946. The mural was created in 2019 by Laurie Schoelen.

This market has been a Reedley institution for over 75 years. Herschel Reed opened Reed’s Market on the northeast corner of Sunset and Evening Glow in 1950. This photo of the market is circa 1963. Don Jadoon purchased the business in 1967, not long after Mr. Reed’s death, and hired Timoteo Gomez as manager. Two and half years later, Mr. Gomez and wife Raquel bought the business and renamed it Timo’s Market. Photo 1984. Since 2002 this has been Gallegos Market, now under the proprietorship of Efrin Gallegos.

A new exhibit is now open at the museum. The exhibit features the work of numerous local area visual artists. Museum director Karey Olson says that one goal of the display is that children will be inspired to explore their creative side. To that end, Olson asked some of the artists to include artwork they created in their childhood. The exhibit will run through September 2026. The museum is open Tuesday and Saturday mornings, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Admission is free.
