Many of you were taking pictures of last week’s Fiesta parade. Seeing photos of past Fiestas is something we at the museum always enjoy. Jeff Rowland sent us this photo and the story behind the photo. “This is a photo of my father, Don Rowland, in his Stearman airplane being towed through the 1949 Fiesta parade. He landed the plane on I Street. Dad and a few other local pilots purchased these airplanes from the government as war surplus aircraft in Tulsa, Oklahoma. These aircraft were used in basic training in World War II for the Army Air Corps (now known as the Air Force). Dad purchased this airplane for approximately $900 and flew it back to Reedley where it was converted to a crop duster. Great Western aviation was formed and based at the Reedley airport.” Thanks, Jeff.

Fiesta is today and tomorrow (October 2 and 3). Be sure and visit the Reedley Historical Society Museum located in Reedley’s original City Hall. Open hours for Fiesta, Friday 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are easy to find -- next to the water towers! Also, visit us at our booth in Pioneer Park on Friday evening, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The city hall photo is from the 1940s and the museum photo is from 2026.

A police department versus fire department boxing match was staged at the National Guard armory as part of the 1950 Fiesta activities. Representing the police was Johnny “Flatfoot” Kroeker. Bozo “Smokey” Aalto represented the fire department. Appellations are courtesy of the Exponent. As you can probably detect from this photo the event was spirited, but not terribly serious. No plans for such a boxing match this year, but lots of other activities. See you at Fiesta this coming Friday and Saturday!

Before the advent of Fiesta in 1946 there was the Harvest Festival. For four years, starting in 1935, Reedley celebrated the Harvest Festival. The Exponent described it as “a three day period of entertainment, fun, shopping and bargain offers by merchants.” And like Fiesta, there was a parade starting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Several of these banners, nearly seven feet wide, were hung along G Street. This banner is now in the museum collection.

Reedley’s American Legion Post opened a canteen downtown in September 1948. Just left of center in this photo is a sign showing the location of the canteen, which was on the second floor above 1117-1119 G Street. The canteen functioned as a private club for its members and guests until it closed in 1954. This photo is from about 1952.

Today is Admission Day! Happy Birthday, California!
This photo shows San Francisco’s Portsmouth Square on May 4, 1850. One hundred and seventy-eight days later this became the site of the first California Admission Day celebration. While California had been admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850, news of this didn’t arrive in California until October 29, 1850, when the Pacific Mail Steamship company steamer “Oregon” arrived in the bay carrying the news from Washington, D.C.

Members of the Reedley Comets girls softball team were treated to a performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus in Fresno in September 1949. Included was a “back of the big top” visit with some of the circus performers. Host for the day was Brother John (standing far left) of the Christian Brothers Mount Tivy Winery – sponsor of the team. The Comets competed from 1948 through 1953 as part of the Central Valley Girls Softball League.

Reedley’s First Mennonite congregation was organized in 1906. The group built their church on the southeast corner of L and 12th Streets in 1908. This George Besaw photo post card likely dates from about 1911. The church building was reconstructed and enlarged in 1914 and enlarged again in the 1940s with additional improvements made in the years since.
