Sainte-Cécile is the largest brick cathedral in the world, but it's the interior that left the biggest impression on me.

From the outside, its massive red-brick walls and fortress-like design were meant to project the power of the Bishops of Albi, who ruled both the Church and the surrounding region during the Middle Ages. Built after the Albigensian Crusade, the cathedral served as an unmistakable symbol of their authority.

Step inside, though, and everything changes. The soaring ceilings and chapels are covered in colorful frescoes, creating the largest painted interior of any cathedral in Europe. Many of the chapels also feature trompe l'œil artwork, where flat walls are painted to look like elaborate carved stone.

The cathedral and neighboring Berbie Palace helped earn Albi UNESCO World Heritage status, recognizing one of Europe's best-preserved episcopal cities and the remarkable influence the bishops once held here.
