Galerie Lucida is thrilled to open the Fall Art Season with Recent Sightings, outsider artist Scott Harbison‘s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
Harbison once again illuminates the walls of Galerie Lucida with his unforgettable and wildly imaginative paintings of otherworldly beings. Humorous and enchanting, his wide-eyed figures crawl, hover, stand, and fly as they interact with each other amidst curious and indeterminate circumstances. In these new paintings, we see Harbison’s artistic growth as he expands upon his visual vocabulary with personal and often cryptic symbolism to accompany his cast of unique lifeforms.
Despite their whimsical nature and alien appearance, Harbison’s spontaneously painted characters possess a surprising range of personality and emotion. Inquisitiveness, playfulness, confusion, guile, and melancholy are just a few of the anthropomorphic characteristics attributable to the gestural overtures and interplay amongst his characters.
The paintings in the exhibition range in size from 4 x 4 in. to 4 x 5 ft., and the figures, painted with acrylic paint and oil stick on canvas and wood, inhabit colorful, abstract grounds, composed extemporaneously with broad, aleatory brushstrokes.
Harbison describes his work as “possibly a cautionary tale… where all life forms, including otherworldly ones, merge and coexist…sometimes peacefully, sometimes not. In a sense, I am leaving behind hieroglyphics, useless to anyone unless they are interested in my version of a not-too-distant reality.”
