WAITING, about 1909. The horse, in its winter coat, had some frost on its tail and body. Richard Throssel was best known for his photos taken while living on Montana’s Crow Reservation. Throssel, one-quarter Canadian Cree, was already a skilled photographer when Edward Curtis came to the Reservation during the winter of 1904-05. One Throssel photo, and perhaps more, appeared without credit in Curtis’s “The North American Indian.”
Was the lone tepee Throssel’s? He would have been traveling with his bulky camera, tripod, and delicate glass-plate negatives. Throssel started photography about 25 years after Miles City’s L.A. Huffman, my favorite frontier photographer. During 1911, Throssel established a studio in Billings. By that time, Huffman was primarily marketing prints of his earlier, historically important captures. -Gary Coffrin

SISTERS, about 1901. Whistler and Hits The One Who Rides The Gray Horse were photographed by Fred E. Miller on the Crow (Apsáalooke) Reservation in Southeastern Montana. Whistler was on the verge of a smile on a cool day. Their dresses were made with the same cotton fabric, their earrings were made from shell.
Miller was adopted into the Crow tribe in 1905. In 1985, “Fred E. Miller: Photographer of the Crows” was published. Text and digital restoration of photo by G.J. Coffrin.

A LAUGH FOR TODAY❤
When NASA was preparing for the Apollo moon landings of the late 60s and early 70s, they did some astronaut training along a Navajo Indian reservation in the SW. One day, a Navajo elder and his grandson were herding animals and came across the space crew. The old man, who only spoke Navajo, asked a question, which the grandson translated: "What are the guys in the big suits doing?" A member of the crew said they were practicing for their trip to the moon." Then, recognizing a promotional opportunity for the spin-doctors, added, "We will be leaving behind a special record with greetings in many languages and such. Would the old man be interested in giving us a greeting to include?"
Upon translation, the old man got really excited and was thrilled at the idea of sending a message to the moon with the astronauts. The NASA folks produced a tape recorder and the old man recorded his message at which the grandson fought back the urge to laugh... but he refused to translate.
After Apollo 11 had successfully landed on the moon and brought its astronauts homes, a new group were training in the desert when one of the NASA officials recognized the Navajo elder and his grandson and went to tell them that the old man's message was indeed on the moon which was met with laughter.
Finally, the NASA rep caught on that not everything was as simple as he had originally thought and asked for a translation. With a chuckle the youngster replied: "Beware of white man; they come to steal your land!"

The Seven Sacred Teachings, also known as the Seven Grandfather Teachings, are a set of teachings that have been passed down from generation to generation by First Nations people of North America. These teachings are the guiding principles for living a meaningful and fulfilling life, and they are essential to maintaining a harmonious relationship between human beings, nature, and the divine.
The Seven Sacred Teachings include:
1. Wisdom involves making wise choices that lead us on a path of positive growth and development. To attain wisdom, one must learn from experiences, seek knowledge from elders, and listen and learn from one's mistakes.
2. Love emphasizes the importance of unconditional love, compassion, and kindness towards ourselves and others. It teaches us to give love freely and unconditionally, without any expectation of receiving love in return.
3. Respect emphasizes the importance of treating oneself, others, and nature with respect. Respect involves acknowledging the value and worth of all living things, and treating each other with kindness, honor, and dignity.
4. Bravery involves courage, fortitude and strength of character. Bravery inspires us to face our fears and overcome obstacles, to push ourselves to our limits and to fight for what is right.
5. Honesty emphasizes the importance of being truthful, trustworthy, and sincere in all our interactions with others. Honesty promotes trust, loyalty, and integrity, and it allows us to build meaningful and enduring relationships.
6. Humility involves having a modest and unpretentious attitude towards life, recognizing that we are all equal and interconnected. Humility inspires us to serve others, to be compassionate towards those who are less fortunate, and to strive to make a positive impact in the world.
7. Truth involves understanding and acknowledging the reality of our existence and our place in the world. It encourages us to seek knowledge, to be open-minded, and to question our assumptions and beliefs.
Each of these teachings are an inseparable whole and work together to create a holistic approach to mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual life, that is centered around humility, respect, and love.

ROSE BOMPARD (BIRD), circa 1911-19. The young Crow (Apsáalooke) woman wore a full-length dress decorated with elk ivories. Each elk had only two ivory teeth, vestigial tusks, so some might have been antler or bone reproductions. A single hole was made in each for attachment to the dress. (Click image to enlarge/clarify.) The several hundred ivories indicated a family of good hunters or enough wealth to acquire ivories.
Rose Bompard married Glen Bird in 1919. She died in 1978 at age 81. Richard Throssel captured the portrait on an 8x10 inch glass plate negative, either while living on the Crow Reservation in eastern Montana or in his studio at Billings if the date was after 1911. Throssel's work was largely ignored until the 1997 publication of “Crow Indian Photographer.” -Gary Coffrin

The girl’s dress, decorated with elk ivories, and the horse’s stunning hand-crafted regalia were preserved on an 8x10 inch glass plate negative by Richard Throssel. At the right was a decorative jingler with 13 spoons. PC users can click image to better see detail.
Throssel made the photograph while living on the Crow Reservation, southeast of Billings, Montana. Since Throssel often used smaller sizes, the large glass plate showed that he attached importance to the view. Motion of the horse’s head and the camera’s slow shutter blurred the reins near the bit. -Gary Coffrin

The Piegan are one of the three groups that make up the Blackfoot Confederacy. They were the most dominant group in the northern Great Plains during the 19th century. The Piegan used to live in the Rocky Mountain Front, the place where the Rocky Mountains meet the Plains, for thousands of years before moving further into the Plains. They lived a nomadic and semi-agricultural life before the introduction of guns and horses into their society. The introduction of European goods facilitated the hunting of bison and prompted them to move into the northern Plains, where they went on to dominate the region. Their first encounter with white people occurred in the 1787-88 winter, when they let a fur trader James Gaddy and an explorer David Thompson camp with them. The Piegan numbered around 3,700 in 1858, a small population previously decimated by smallpox and starvation. Today there are around 27,000 full blooded Piegan Blackfeet, and around 80,000 of Piegan descent. The Piegan population is split between the U.S.-Canada border, as they were historically forced to pick a side when the borders were drawn. These divisions, however, only physically split up a nation, as the bonds of its people are that of blood and are thus stronger than any barrier between them.
