Our 2026 Maine Forestry Museum Annual Benefit Auction is now LIVE!

Every bid helps us achieve our mission to preserve and share Maine's rich forestry heritage, educate visitors about the contributions of logging families and the forestry industry, inspire appreciation for our forest resources, and ensure this important history is preserved for future generations.

What an incredible Logging Festival weekend!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us. Whether you visited the festival, cheered along the parade route, participated in the parade, volunteered your time, you made this year's festival a wonderful success.

A special thank you to the Axe Women Loggers of Maine Axe Women for their incredibly entertaining show. We also want to thank the talented dancers from Northern Explosion Dance Studio who shared their amazing clogging performances with us.

We're also grateful to our vendors, presenters, sponsors, museum members, and everyone who helped make the weekend possible. It takes an amazing community to bring an event like this together, and we couldn't have done it without you.

We can't wait to see you again next year!

Our next member of the Maine Forestry Museum Hall of Fame to be inducted on Saturday July 18 is a very deserving Rangeley local who passed in 1992 but needs to be remembered and honored for his dedication to the woods industry.

Maine Forestry Museum Hall of Fame 2026

David “Uncle Remus” Haines

A native of Lower Dallas Plantation, David started his work in the woods business at the tender age of 13 with his father using buck saws and axes. They twitched wood using ponies and horses.

At 15 he drove a loaded 4-foot pulp truck to take his driver’s test.
In his early years he cut wood for Bruce Dunham as well as hauling it to the mill. He worked for Albert Berry for years. When he started working for Albert, they loaded 8-foot pulp by hand. After a few years he bought a truck with a loader on it which made life easier.
He worked at Brackley’s Bolt wood mill and often tended the furnaces at night.

He was working cutting wood for Delbert Greene when he had unfortunate accident that caused him to lose his leg below the knee. After he recovered and got his prosthesis, he went to work at Stratton Lumber running the crane/debarker when it opened. After a few years this began to bother his leg, so he opened Dave’s sharp shop. He sharpened circular saws, chain saws, hand saws and whatever else people needed sharpened. This is where the nickname Uncle Remus really stuck because people stopped to get things sharpened and would stay and swap stories about their exploits in their younger years.

David’s life revolved around working in the woods in every aspect. He had three organizations he was passionate about, Haines Reunion, The American Legion, and the Rangeley Logging Museum, of which he was a founding member.

We are pleased to add his name, long overdue, to the list of people who have made significant contributions and dedicated their efforts to working in Maine's forests.

The countdown is on! In just one week, the Maine Forestry Museum's 2026 Logging Festival returns for two days of history, education, demonstrations, competitions, and family fun.

Friday features our Working Forest Tour, educational programming, demonstrations, and the traditional Bean Burying.

Then on Saturday, enjoy the Logging Parade, Opening Ceremonies, the Festival & Craft Fair, logging competitions featuring the Axe Women of Maine, children's activities, food, live entertainment, Hall of Fame inductions, and much more.
