George Henry Haynes (1835-1912): The Man and His Rangeley Lakes Guidebooks presented by William B. Krohn

Historian William B. Krohn will share his fascinating research on George H. Haynes, a successful lumberman and general merchant in Winn, Maine. Supported by advertisers and Maine’s early railroads, Haynes traveled throughout Maine in the late 19th century selling advertisements in his exceptionally well-illustrated booklets that featured specific cities, hotels, and railroads serving a selected region. Between 1885 and 1899, Haynes published almost 60 titles primarily promoting Maine tourism (a few titles included New England resorts outside of Maine). His 78-page booklet entitled Sportsmen's Paradise: Rangeley Lakes, Parmachenee, Kennebago, and Seven Ponds via Boston & Maine Railroad, Maine Central Railroad, and Sandy River Railroad was one of his most successful booklets, being issued in seven editions. This presentation compares Haynes’s guidebooks to other, more widely known western Maine guidebooks. Although seldom cited today, students of Maine tourism and Maine’s outdoor history should consider Haynes’ guidebooks as ‘must use’ information sources.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Evening at the Museum event at the Outdoor Heritage Museum on Friday, July 24!

Guests enjoyed an inspiring evening celebrating the life and legacy of Fly Rod Crosby. Michelle Landry opened the program with a fascinating presentation on Crosby's remarkable story, followed by Eugenie Francine, who shared updates on the Friends of Fly Rod Crosby's partnership with the Maine Guides Education Fund to commission a life-sized bronze statue in her honor. Sculptor Erin McCarthy concluded the evening with a behind-the-scenes look at the intricate process of bringing the statue to life.

A heartfelt thank you to Michelle, Eugenie, and Erin for sharing their knowledge and passion with our community.

The Rangeley History Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays in July & August, 12pm-4pm.
The downtown Rangeley walking tour starts at 11am on Saturdays.

Fly Rod Crosby: Memorializing a Maine Legend
presented by Eugenie Francine and Michelle Landry

During this presentation, Historic Rangeley Director Emeritus Eugenie Francine will share information about her work on a monument project currently underway that will honor Fly Rod Crosby with a bronze statue in Augusta. The Sculptor, Erin McCarthy will join us to discuss her artistic process and her work on this exciting project. Historic Rangeley Executive Director Michelle Landry will share a brief history on Crosby as well as some interesting and unique artifacts in the collections that give more insight into Fly Rod's life and work.

Doors open at 6PM. Enjoy complimentary beverages and self-guided tours of the museum before the presentation.

A special thank you to Leslie Hilyard for a wonderful presentation on Carrie Stevens and Herb Welch--two of our Rangeley Region History Makers featured in the new exhibit at the Rangeley History Museum downtown. We also want to thank Rangeley Lakeside Theater for hosting us and Classic Provisions for catering.
