On Friday, October 23, we’re hosting a dark gathering, Adult Nights: Tales of Woe, to explore gothic literature and the real-life science that inspired its most infamous stories.

The evening will overflow with terrifying experiences, from a Poe lookalike contest to a Cabinet of Curiosities to examining Lovecraft’s creatures of the abyss, among other things. Also, we’re not just celebrating iconic historic works — we’re hosting a spooky book fair, featuring more than a dozen regional authors performing live readings. Add local vendors, themed cocktails, plus a live band to our concoction, and it becomes an affair you can’t bear to miss.

Muslim astronomers mapped the stars, physicians studied the human body to help shape modern medicine, and artists turned geometry into stunning patterns. Explore their legacy at Roots of Discovery: Sands of Knowledge, with live Arabic calligraphy, marbled ebru art, African wildlife, and coffee sampling.

Speakers include Dr. Fatma Wasel, a State Dept. Alumna with a Doctorate in Executive Leadership, as well as Mohsen Zakaib, physician-in-training and co-founder of RISE at the Islamic Association of Raleigh.

220 years ago, Lewis and Clark concluded their historic expedition of the American West. On Thursday, October 8, listen to our own Dr. Roland Kays, Head of the Biodiversity Research Lab, as he shares his experience of retracing their route earlier this year.

From Pittsburg to the Pacific Ocean, his team explored thousands of miles, set countless camera traps and spoke with many local experts. Hear the stories of what was lost, what endured, and the impact that the last two centuries have had on our wildlife.

The STEAM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities returns Tuesday, October 13.

This free event lets grades 6-12 learners connect with role models in STEAM fields and chat with exhibitors about available resources. Hear from Dr. Louis Vaught, an engineer who’s helped develop materials used by NASA, the Air Force and the NSF. He’ll also join a panel discussion with neurosociology and physical therapy students to discuss challenges and triumphs on their career paths.

After a summer hiatus, Teen Science Café returns this Friday! It’s a series that invites teenagers to learn about science from real-world professionals in a relaxed, informal (and yes, ungraded) way.

First up, we’re heading beyond our own galaxy with Dr. Patrick Treuthardt, Assistant Head of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Lab. He’ll chat about his work studying the winding arms of spiral galaxies and how the public can contribute through a collaborative science project called Spiral Graph: Cluster Buster.

Something out of this world is now on exhibit— a new lunar meteorite. This one’s a rare troctolite, a 4-billion-year-old rock from deep below the Moon’s crust, formed when the Moon was still volcanic. It's specimens like this that help us better understand the Moon’s evolutionary history.

Known to our scientists as NEA 089, it was originally found in 2024 in northern Africa, but you can find it on display in the Museum, at the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Lab.
