Throwback Thursday

Many of the artifacts in the Karshner Museum collection were collected by Dr. Warner and Mrs. Karshner’s during their travels in the 1930s.

From his journeys through Europe and the Mediterranean, these objects continue to tell stories and connect us to cultures around the world nearly 100 years later.

Take a closer look — What details stand out to you? Where do you think these items are from?

Artifact of the Week: June 8 – 12

Ammonite

This is an ammonite, a fossil of an extinct marine mollusk that lived in the world's oceans from the Devonian period until the end of the Cretaceous period. The ammonite's spiral, chambered shell is a remarkable example of natural design. These shells served as a buoyancy device, allowing the creature to move up and down in the water column. Due to their widespread presence in the fossil record, ammonites are considered key index fossils, helping paleontologists date the rock layers in which they are found. It was donated to the Karshner Museum in 1943.

A heartfelt thank you!

Today marks the final day of our field trip program at the Karshner Museum, and we want to recognize Mrs. Myerhoff for her dedication to the museum.

Through her knowledge and passion, she created meaningful, standards-aligned experiences that brought the past, present, and future to life for so many learners.

As the Puyallup School District looks ahead and field trips to the Karshner Museum pause for the foreseeable future, we are truly grateful for the impact she has made.

Mrs. Myerhoff will be missed, and we wish her all the best in her future adventures.

Our final field trip of the year!

Thank you to the 1st graders from Maplewood Elementary for visiting the museum and closing out the school year with our final field trip, Time Travelers and Treasure Hunters: What is a Museum?

Students explored what makes a museum special, discovered artifacts, and stepped into the role of curious historians. It was a wonderful way to wrap up a full season of learning, exploration, and discovery.

Thank you for being part of it!

The adventures continue!

Thank you to the 2nd graders from Brouillet Elementary for visiting the museum for our Global Passport: Cultures Through Artifacts Field Trip—our second to last trip of the school year! 🎉

From exploring artifacts to asking thoughtful questions, students brought so much curiosity and enthusiasm to their visit. It’s been a fantastic year of global learning, and this group kept that energy going strong right to the finish line!

One more field trip to go…

Artifact of the Week: June 1 – 5

Bathing Costume

This is a bathing costume dating from 1910. Crafted from wool, it consists of a short-sleeved tunic paired with full bloomers that extend to the knee. While this style appears conservative by contemporary standards, it was a big departure from the heavy, restrictive dresses, stockings, and shoes that defined the beach attire of the previous century. It was donated to Karshner Museum in 1987.
