Neuberger Museum of Art

Neuberger Museum of Art Modern, contemporary, and African art, located at the heart of Purchase College. Founded in 1969 with a promised gift of 300 works by Roy R.

The Neuberger Museum of Art is a center of teaching and learning for all stages of life. Experience exhibitions of modern, contemporary and African art and art-inspired events in our Philip Johnson-designed building at the heart of Purchase College, State University of New York. Neuberger—one of the greatest private collectors, philanthropists, and arts advocates of the twentieth century—the Museu

m’s collection has grown to over 6,000 objects by artists including Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock. Our signature biannual award, the Roy R. Neuberger Prize, recognizes the work of exceptional contemporary artists, continuing our founding patron’s dedication to supporting artists early in their careers. Alongside our permanent collection, critically acclaimed special exhibitions draw local, regional, and international audiences to our galleries in Westchester. Tours, lectures, and programs engage our broad and diverse community. On any day, you can see adults, families, K-12 school children and their teachers, and Purchase College students, faculty, and staff enjoying the museum. At the Neuberger, appreciating art is active and interactive. Here, students, scholars, artists, and art lovers find common ground to experiment, question, and grow. About the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art:

A good time was had by all yesterday afternoon as we celebrated our Volunteer Museum Educators with a luncheon centered on the theme of “memories.” After remarks by Curator of Education Diana Puglisi thanking the VMEs for their dedication (many have been with us for years, even decades!) volunteers shared memorable moments and enjoyed an on-theme cake for dessert.

Volunteer Museum Educators are a dedicated group of art-lovers that are trained to work with a variety of audiences, leading 60-minute in-person tours of the works on view in our galleries.

Happy birthday Marilyn Monroe!

You can see lots of Marilyns, including ours by Willem de Kooning, at the National Portrait Gallery this summer.

Happy birthday, Marilyn Monroe ✨

Born as Norma Jeane, this young star grew up in Los Angeles, California, moving in and out of foster homes and orphanages. While working in a munitions factory during the Second World War, she was scouted as a model.

She is photographed here at 19 by Hungarian-born photographer André de Dienes. Monroe liked and trusted De Dienes, and the images they created together—often taken on location in deserts, forests or, as here, on a blustery beach—convey joy and a powerful sense of freedom.

After a successful modelling career, inspired by Hollywood’s leading ladies, she began taking drama classes. Following the end of her first marriage, she signed her first studio contract with Twentieth Century Fox. She soon dyed her hair blonde and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.

See this portrait in our new exhibition, Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait, opening this Thursday, 4 June.

May’s First Wednesday: Open Classroom was inspired by the exhibit Guerrilla Girls: Food for Thought. Participants at this fully-student led evening took a much needed break from finals week to engage with art, activism, and creative expression through a series of interactive experiences that included film screenings, a DJ, and collage-making — plus some really delicious banana-flavored treats.

The Open Classroom programs for this First Wednesday are a collaboration between the Arts Management course Museum Education and Learning, taught by Associate Professor Melissa Forstrom, and the Education and Visitor Services teams at the Neuberger Museum of Art. First Wednesdays will not run during the summer months but will return in the fall. Keep an eye out for details!

For a few days last week, the creative and thought-provoking work created by Congressional Art Competition participants from New York’s 16th district on the theme “Revolutionary 250” were on view here at the Museum. And last Thursday, we were so honored to be able to again host a reception for these young artists and their friends, family, and proud supporters.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute and the U.S. House of Representatives invite high school students from across the country to showcase their talen...
