Real good day at the museum today. Special thanks to Earl and Suzanne of the Space Museum & Grissom Center in Bonne Terre, Mo. They made the trip out to Huntsville, AL. and picked up this H-1 rocket engine from the Apollo era. More specifically from the Saturn 1B rocket. Then brought it all the way out here to Co. to deliver it to our museum. It's going to be a great addition to the display in front of the museum. And as always, Dick Wood is a master with the fork truck.

One of the true gems in the museum is this full-sized mockup of an astronaut wearing an MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit), The MMU allowed Astronauts to venture away from the Space Shuttle without the need of a tether. It was operated by using 24 different Nitrogen gas thrusters. The MMU was used on 3 Space Shuttle missions in 1984. This display was donated by Lockheed Martin.

Recently added to the museum collection is this 1960 full scale model of the TIROS 1 weather satellite. TIROS was the first satellite that was capable of remote sensing of the Earth, enabling scientists to view the Earth from a new perspective: space. This model was donated by Lockheed Martin.

A major step in searching for habitable planets is finding suitable stars that could foster the emergence of complex organisms and maybe even intelligent life. Surveys by Hubble and other telescopes suggest that stars slightly cooler than our sun—called orange dwarfs—are better hangouts for advanced life than our sun.

There are more of them in our galaxy and they live much longer than our sun, allowing for biological evolution to advance in an infinity of directions. Also, they put out much less deadly radiation than their smaller cousins, the red dwarf stars, which are the most abundant stars in the Milky Way. Imagine a fleet of 100 Hubble Space Telescopes scanning the universe at warp speed. With NASA’s Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), scheduled for launch in the mid-2020s, this vision will (effectively) become reality. WFIRST will capture the equivalent of 100 high-resolution Hubble images in a single shot, imaging large areas of the sky 1,000 times faster than Hubble. In months, WFIRST could survey as much of the sky in near-infrared light—and in just as much detail—as Hubble has over its entire three decades in space.

To prepare for the mission, astronomers are simulating observations like this one of our neighboring Andromeda galaxy. This composite figure shows a single simulated WFIRST image overlaid on a ground-based photo of Andromeda.

Get a closer look at the simulated image and read more about the wide variety of essential scientific questions WFIRST will address: https://hubblesite.org/contents/news-releases/2020/news-2020-02
