“It's so important to see new African American museums open and thrive and also create significant impact.”

Stephanie visited the African American Museum of Rhode Island this summer, only a few months after its opening earlier this year. She explored its powerful inaugural exhibition, Welcome to the Neighborhood, which highlights the history of Rhode Island’s Black communities, the neighborhoods where they thrived, and the impact of displacement.

A new institution with an important story to tell and a future worth watching.

In this edition of HueArts Voices, Dr. Melaine Ferdinand-King, Associate Director and Curator at the African American Museum of Rhode Island, shares the importance of making museums spaces where Black people feel seen, represented, and empowered.

Founded to serve as a cultural hub for African American history, AAMRI centers Black history, leadership, and community voices. Dr. Ferdinand-King discusses how the museum is building an open, reciprocal relationship with the community and rethinking who gets to shape the curatorial experience.

SAVE THE DATE! A gathering in honor of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This is an opportunity for community members to connect and ask questions of RI historical societies and cultural organizations.

We will meet near the new monument instated by the Bristol Middle Passage Project in Bristol, RI - Independence Park.
