Have you visited the museum lately to see the revitalized outdoor farm equipment that is over 100 years old? The project started the spring on 2024 and was completed by the end of the year.
A lot of people and organizations helped to make this happen including the American Legion Post 294, Scout Troops 1294 and 2294 and the Historical Society. Congratulations to Faith Millena whose contributions helped her become an Eagle Scout.
Come by and visit. Check out the website at https://sevenspringsmuseum.org/restoring-history-through-service-faith-millenas-eagle-scout-project-at-the-seven-springs-museum/ to read more about the transformation.

In Celebration of Black History Month...
Visit our free Museum on February 23 and learn about individuals who grew up in Powder Springs. You might even discover something (or someone) related to your family. At 2 PM, a professional genealogist will present on "Tracing the Past: Overcoming Genealogical Roadblocks for African American and White Families"
Larry W. Thomas, a professional genealogist, who occasionally works for the TV "Finding Your Roots" (credited with both the Terry Crews and Julia Roberts episodes), will give a presentation on the challenges faced researching American ancestors. He has also worked on several heirship cases where the original landholder was a formerly enslaved person.
The museum is looking to expand its collection of historical pertinent items related to Powder Springs residents and events.
Come see us and bring your family and friends!

Lincoln's Kentucky:

What: Courting candle

When: 1600-1800s

The Story: A fun bit of early American folklore! As the story goes, fathers used courting candles to set boundaries for their daughters. Once a candle burned down to the top spiral, the date was over and it was time for a suitor to go home. The more a father approved of a man, the higher he could raise the candle; the less he approved, the lower the candle was set.

Historically speaking, this style of candle holder was actually brought to early America by German immigrants. The spiral was simply the most practical form to use since it allowed candles to be twisted down into the holder and held soft candles upright in hot weather. It also helped conserve candles, which were labor intensive and not very easy to come by. If you only used half a candle, you could still fit it in the holder and easily light it just by spinning the little hammer up a few spirals higher.

So while concerned fathers may have used them to discourage a bad match, they weren't specifically designed for that purpose. It still makes for a good story though!

Do you know what a courting candle is and how it was used? It is such an interesting “story”, I had to do some research and found an article on the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park page with a picture of a slightly different looking candle. The exhibit at our museum was the launching point to learn more and think how other things around the home may be used to politely signal the end of a date! What have you used?
