🎉 Happy birthday to Thomas Potts, the firstborn child of Ruth and John Potts. The family bible in our collection records "Thomas Potts, Son of John and Ruth Potts, was born May the 29th about half an hour after one in the afternoon AD 1735."

With 13 children and their respective spouses, the Potts family tree is very... full!
🌳🍃To help guests keep it all straight during a tour of our ongoing exhibit, "War, Iron, and Divided Loyalties: Struggles of a Revolutionary Generation," we have this family guide posted in every room. When John and Ruth moved into their new home, Pottsgrove Manor, in July of 1752, Thomas, Samuel, John Jr., Martha, David, Joseph, Jonathan, Anna, Isaac, and James were alive, ranging in age from infancy to 17. The final three Potts children–Rebecca, Jesse, and Ruth Jr–were born at Pottsgrove Manor. In July of 1776, Ruth Jr. was 17, and her eldest brother, Thomas, was 41. The ensuing War for Independence shaped the course of the rest of their lives.

Only three images of the Potts children are known to exist: John Potts Jr., Dr. Jonathan Potts, and Anna Potts. In lieu of images, we've used artifacts on display in the exhibit or simple silhouettes. To learn more about these Revolutionary siblings, be sure to visit for a tour this weekend!

Join us here at Pottsgrove Manor for June’s Association Day in one week’s time! We are working to reproduce an 18th Century quilt down to the last stitch. This month we are going to begin researching the quilt designs and practice sketching out the patterns on fabric and experimenting with wood block printing to hone the technique.

Please join Pottsgrove Manor in remembering the men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion, from 1776 to 2026.

Below: The Grave of Dr. Jonathan Potts, who served as Deputy Director-General of the Northern Department during the American War for Independence. He established Smallpox hospitals at Forts George and Ticonderoga and worked tirelessly to inoculate the Continental soldiers. He began to take ill and resigned his Commission in 1780, passing away from unknown causes on October 15, 1781, likely due to his constant exposure to disease. He is interred in Pottstown at the Potts Family Burial Ground.

On May 22nd, 1753, the household account ledger for John Potts records purchases made for Patty.
"To Cash to your Daughter, Patty....
To paid for a Pattern of a Gown for D[itto]" costing 1 lb 7 shillings 6 pence. 💰

"Patty" was Martha Potts, the family’s oldest daughter, then just 13 years old. Raised in the household of a successful ironmaster, Martha was accustomed to fine imported goods and fashionable fabrics. By 1769, she had married Thomas Rutter III and settled at their home, Laurel Lodge, here in Pottstown.
Her 1804 will paints a picture of a life that blended luxury and practicality—listing both damask silk furnishings and homespun textiles. But by 1774, the world around her had changed. With the passage of the Continental Association, everyday purchases became political acts, and choosing homespun over imported goods became a sign of support for the American cause.
Through a simple ledger entry, we glimpse how one young woman’s life and choices were shaped by a changing world.

The Potts siblings came of age during a time of profound change and upheaval as tensions grew into war. Join us this weekend for a guided tour of our ongoing exhibit, War, Iron, & Divided Loyalties: Struggles of a Revolutionary Generation, and discover how their lives were shaped by a world in crisis.

Don’t Forget! In One Month’s time, Pottsgrove Manor is proud to host Forgotten History Tours! Celebrate Juneteenth by learning about Margaret, Benjamin Sebastian, Black Sam and many others who history forgot.

Event is June 20th and 21st, during regular museum hours, tours take place on the hour for this event.

The peonies are popping at Pottsgrove Manor! 🌸Take a pause to stop and smell the roses (peonies) before or after your guided tour of our new exhibit, "War, Iron, & Divided Loyalties: Struggles of a Revolutionary Generation."

Join us during regular museum hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 -4, or Sundays, 1 - 4. The final tour leaves daily at 3 pm.
