Portville Historical and Preservation Society

Portville Historical and Preservation Society PHPS is an organization that preserves the history of Portville, and will soon have a museum to share with the community.
The Portville Historical and Preservation Society is a non-profit organization that was established in 1986, in response to a renewed interest in the preservation of Portville's past. The Regents of the State of New York acknowledged our organization with a Provisional Charter on December 11, 1987, and later, with an Absolute Charter in 2000.

Our Society seeks to promote an awareness and pride in the community's heritage that will insure its preservation for future generations. Our main focus is collecting, preserving, and exhibiting historic materials, pertinent to the social and cultural development of the Town and Village of Portville, New York, and surrounding areas. We also sponsor programs of historical relevance, maintain an office for research assistance and displays, and produce our own publications. In 2001, we added the preservation of local historic sites to our Charter.

We had planned on having a 'Birthday Party' to commemorate Col. Charles Eshelman on October 12th. We're going to have to postpone the party due to issues beyond our control. Some of our trustees who would normally be helping that day are either out of town or ill and unable to help. We hope to have something either in the spring next year or reschedule for October next year. We're anxious to open the house for all to see the progress of our new office/museum. For those who already purchased tickets, your money will be refunded shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience. We look forward to seeing you all SOON!

Just a heads up that the office on Maple Ave WILL be open tomorrow from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Come visit us!!

08/01/2019

Just for the record (and so FB won't hound us!) WE ARE OPEN TODAY!! Come see us between 10 this morning and 4 this afternoon! We'd love to see you!!

07/13/2019

Come visit us in the park today! Portville Heritage Day!!

04/13/2019

Opening day will be Thursday, May 2nd on Maple Ave from 10 a.m till 4 p.m. We will be starting to move things to Bedford Corners over the next few weeks. It's a L O N G process with all the boxes, books, and furniture that we have. Floors and walls are basically finished, but windows still need attention. We hope to be fully in before the end of September, but much work is still needed. Any help is appreciated! Hope to see you soon!!

03/20/2019

A few of the Trustees are working at Bedford Corners getting rooms ready for shelving/storage so we can move the office SOON! There's much to be done: painting touch ups, washing windows, going through boxes, etc. We're anxious to move and have a 'Grand Opening'. We love volunteers . . .

10/02/2018

We are officially closed for the rest of the year, HOWEVER, some of us are still going in to the office to do some extra work, packing, organizing, etc. to make the move to Bedford Corners. If you're interested in helping, stop in on a Thursday if you see Terri's Explorer or Cindy's van outside. We love helpers!

08/16/2018

Just a reminder that we're still open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. on Maple Ave. Our newsletter was sent out last week. If you didn't get one, become a member so you're updated on what's going on, and you'll get a bit of Portville history as well! Memberships are still VERY inexpensive and won't break the budget. Brick orders for Bedford Corners are still being taken as well. Support our One Room Schoolhouse!

07/13/2018

For the last few weeks we've been busy going through things at the 17 Maple Ave office in anticipation for our move to Bedford Corners. Gail Feuchter, our VP, has been a huge help in taking pictures and recording items that had previously been stored, but not accessioned. We are finding that the older we get, the more precious the memories. Thus, we're documenting more, scanning more, and looking forward to displaying more. Come visit the Maple Ave office before we move and we may just put you to work as well!

05/02/2018

Tomorrow is our opening of the PHPS office on Maple Ave. at 10 a.m. Come in and visit us!!

09/27/2017

Just a reminder that we will be closing the office on Maple Ave. tomorrow for the remainder of the year. If you haven't been in to visit yet, now's your chance! Hopefully over the winter months we'll be able to be moving things to Bedford Corners to set up our new office. Let us know if you're interested in assisting! THANKS!!

06/07/2017

We had a request at the historical society office last week from a person who is researching the history of high school wrestling in our area. He is asking if anyone remembers the song that was always played in the 1970's at Portville Central School during the wrestling matches when a Portville wrestler would win his match. It was not Na Na Hey Hey by Steam

04/07/2017

Looking forward to opening our doors again at 17 Maple Ave on May 4th! Our first day at the PHPS office for 2017! Come join us from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.!

We hope that you can come join us for a bit of Christmas festivity and see the progress at Bedford Corners!

09/29/2016

Sadly today is our last day open for the year. Stop in and see us before the door closes . . . 10 am till 4 pm. We will still be busy at Bedford Corners as we prepare for our Christmas Open House in December. Interested in helping out? Let us know!

Because of the lack of rain in the Allegheny River vestiges of the old Mersereau Dam can be seen from the bridge at Millgrove. This close to the area where the Genesee Valley Canal crossed the Oswayo and continued to the ponding area. It crossed the road near here. Several years ago an area of the road sunk at that place.

This lovely stained glass is being raffled off to raise money for the Portville Covered Bridge. The tickets are $5 for 10 chances that can be purchased at PHPS on Thursdays 10-4. The drawing will be held on September 29th. It truly is a lovely piece of artwork and would look great in your home! Take a chance . . .

We had a work day at Bedford Corners today and had some wonderful PCS girls helping out in moving things from the house to the Grange. This is in anticipation of getting the walls and ceilings done throughout in preparation of moving the office from Maple Ave. to Bedford corners. Thanks, girls for all your help!! (Terry, Mike, and Tim helped us out with the heavy stuff!)

Tomorrow, September 24th, will be our last official day open for this year. We'll also be picking the winning number for the 'Plus Quilt' raffle. We want to say thank you for your support and encouragement over the year. It's been a busy one! Hope you stop in before the office closes . . . We'll still be active throughout the fall, winter, and spring as we continue working on Bedford Corners and our anticipated move to our new office. We'll keep you posted on our progress. If you're interested in helping, contact Cindy Keeley, Ronda Pollock, or Terri Batt. Hope to hear from you!!

This is the 'Plus Quilt' recently finished to be raffled off for PHPS. Not sure how many pluses there are, but there are no duplicates in the entire quilt. A large percentage of the material is vintage and was used by the women in Charles Eshelman's family. Lovingly washed and preserved, pieces were cut and used in this quilt. It's over 80 x 80. Exact information will be posted soon with notification on ticket prices and availability.

We will have a table there (#43) with our new notecards from Marilyn Reynolds' watercolor paintings of Bedford Corners Schoolhouse! Hope to see you there!!

Just because we haven't posted anything doesn't mean that we haven't been busy! The office has been closed for the year but there is much going on behind the scenes. There is still work to be done at the Bedford Corners Schoolhouse and LOTS of work to be done at 'Charlie's House'. If you're interested in getting your hands a bit dirty and willing to help, we can find you a job. Just let one of the officers or trustees know and they'll put you in touch with whomever is heading up certain projects. Thank you so much for your continued support!!

Just finished scanning David Pupo's album of Van Wormer's Mills in Ceres. It is a fantastic collection of pictures of the mills, the family, workers and friends. F. M. Van Wormer was also a Civil War veteran in a PA Regiment. Lots of history there. Most exciting to David is the photography of a narrow gauge section of the Allegany Central that ran into the yard. If you are wondering just where this was, the street has a sign called "Low St." just past the turn off to the bridge in Ceres. The mill ran out of lumber and closed in 1902. What is the connection to Portville, you ask? Lumberman Wallace Weston's daughter, Edith, married Edith Van Wormer Walsh's son. Here are a few snaps from the album.

The dedication ceremony on Sunday, July 13th, was a wonderful time with Senator Cathy Young and many PHPS friends! We were glad that all came out to share our new flagpole, bricks, paint job, landscaping, and interior. The memories that were shared were especially nice to hear! There is still some more work to be done inside, but we're about 90-95% finished. If you've got some time on your hands we've got something to occupy you. Just give us a call!!

A big THANK YOU to Mark Weitzel for creating our new schoolhouse sign! He has a great helper, his granddaughter, Ava Andrews. She is quite the little artist too! Thanks to Mark, for doing such a great job and he donated all his time and materials for the project - what a great supporter of PHPS!

02/12/2014

Thank you to all of you who have hit the like button for Portville Historical and Preservation Society! We're getting VERY excited about this spring! Cindy, and sometimes Terri, are busy getting the schoolhouse emptied out so the floor and walls can be finished. The flagpole, bricks, etc. should be going in once the snow melts, and the landscaping finished up. At Charlie's we're now looking at an almost finished handicap bathroom that looks AWESOME! This means that those working there can spend more hours getting things taken care of and not have to leave for 'potty breaks'. We're looking at having the schoolhouse open for tours officially in July when we have Senator Cathy Young help with our GRAND OPENING! Stay posted for dates, times, etc..

10/10/2013

Even though the office is closed for the rest of the year, we've been busy at Bedford Corners! If you're in the neighborhood, check out the Grange where a new roof has been going on and the old addition taken off. New doors put on and getting a major facelift! At least now the floor will hold people when they come in and the roof won't fall in! The Schoolhouse is getting some landscaping done as the new walkway is being put in, the flagpole will be going up, and the brick memorial walk gets laid. PROGRESS! Hope to have the Schoolhouse open in the spring!! Stay tuned . . .

Had a wonderful Heritage Day today in Portville! Overcast yet warm. Bent Brass and Chris Piaggi with his bagpipes serenaded us this afternoon. Totally enjoyable! We were able to see many friends, make new ones, added to the membership list, and sold some books to people who wanted to learn more about our wonderful town!
Huge thank you to all who stopped by our table to visit!! :-)
