WPRM Western Pacific in Z Scale Layout

WPRM Western Pacific in Z Scale Layout The 1986 Model Railroader Magazine Project Layout, Western Pacific in Z Scale. Now housed at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA.

The Western Pacific in Z Scale, as built by Model Railroader Magazine in 1986. Currently, the layout is in operation as a display inside the Gift Shop of the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. The layout itself is mostly unchanged, other than the plexiglass that has been added for the protection of the trains. The rolling stock, sadly, is not original and has been bought by members of the Model Rail

road Committee to stock the layout and provide operational locomotives. We currently run two AZL Geeps and three MT Geeps, and while we have six MT F Units that can run, other factors prevent their use in long term operation that the layout can see on high traffic days. All things considered, we do our best to keep the layout operational with as little down time as possible so that visitors can enjoy the Western Pacific in Z Scale.

Photo from last here but I had a set of MT F7A&B running that lasted all last year, which is pretty amazing considering the conditions and the amount of hours they get. Unfortunately I had to swap to our AZL power this year since the F7B was the only one that wanted to play nice.

Got all the plastic down today to do a little maintaince on the layout. Cleaning track, checking how the trains are running, etc. Been open a week now, figured I should take advantage of a closed day to finally do the work. Currently, the museum is open Thursday-Sunday 10-5, beginning in May, we'll be open 7 days a week.

With the Museum season opening soon in April, the Z Scale crew is hard at work preparing for the season. Thankfully, the layout weathered the winter downtime pretty well.

Winter downtime (Museum is closed for winter other than Santa Trains) means it is layout and equipment maintenance time. The WP AZL engine, having a new motor installed due to failure of the old one, is being tested while pulling our track cleaning car. In the front, closest to the camera, the display train consist sits out of the way on the yard lead so that the main line is free for the WP AZL engine to run around.
